Water Blocks for 6970

This is for a friend NOT ME. Ok so I have a friend building a new computer for gaming. He's really set on water cooling soon so he wants to get a video card that will accept a water block. He was looking at XFX but I steered him away from that company. I read that with the 6970's XFX did away with the BIOS switch, now use cheap parts, and changed thier reference boards to a new version without telling anyone so now when you get them you don't know what your getting. You may or may not get a reference board and you won't know until you open it up. If its not a reference board your pretty much screwed and have to pay a 15% restocking fee. Anway he really likes HIS. The two he is looking at is listed below.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814161356

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814161382 (out of stock right now)

So here's the problem. The first is listed on Cooling Config as being a reference PCP board and should accept just about any water block. The second is not listed as a reference board and it will only accept a nickel plated waterblock from EK, however EK has had problems with corrosion on thier nickel plating so he doens't know what to do. He likes the IceQ turbo better because it has a higher core clock and memory clock BUT is concearned about the EK water block. So is it worth it? Is it worth getting the EK waterblock for the IceQ? How common is the corrosion problem? Do the benifits of higher clock rates out weight the possiblity of getting a bad waterblock that would corrode?

the ek problem has been solved from what I know of. If you buy a ek product that is nickel plated make sure it has EN labeled some where.

If he is going to overclock whats the point of buying a overclocked card.

O wait I didn't see one of them was pre-over clocked. I thought they were both stock speeds.

Edit- Maybe I'm having a brain fart but where are you seeing that its pre-overclocked? I thought 880 and 900mhz were stock speeds for the 6970. I've seen 890 and 945 pre-overclocked but I was under the impression 880 and 900 were stock.

New XFX cards use the V2 board. The EK V2 block works great on them.

O. I don't know I think he was pretty set on HIS. There just seems to be to many complaints with XFX's components and horrible customer service.

So is that the only way to tell the difference between the fixed version and the old problem version? Would the Ek be a stamp, sticker and where would it be?
