6970+6990 or crossfire?

Thread Starter
Hey OC I was wondering if I should add a 6990 to my 6970 or just add another 6970 for crossfire. I read somewhere that cross firing with a 6990 would only have it work at the 6970 specs, is this true? What would be the best and how would it work.
Thanks.

if you want the ultimate multi moniter set up, the 6970 + 6990, if you only have 1 monitor then that will pretty much be able to max everything out for a while

CF 6970 will be more than enough for single monitor use, but the 6990+6970 will make it more future proof.

Personally, im saving up for a 6990 right now, so if you have the budget, by all means, the 6990 should satisfy your graphical power needs for a lonng time

the 6990 is basically 2 6970 running a slightly lower clock, and the entire set up runs as fast as the slowest card, but the 6990's overclock pretty well so thats not a problem, especially if you water cool.

onyl one con though, the 6990's get a bit loud

if anything, if you run a intensive game, your cpu would probably bottleneck first before even reaching the potential of the 6970+6990 setup

You misunderstood what you "heard"

You will be running it "Tri Fire"

The 6970 will only run at the clock of the 6990 which is lower unless you OC the 6990 to keep up with the 6970.

But they all are 2 GB ram per gpu unlike sli'ing like a 1.5gb and a 3gb gtx 580 where then they will both run at 1.5gb which is something along the lines of what I think you heard.

The 6990 is the same spec as 6970 just with 2 gpus... Do you want tri fire or 2fire? With a 24" monitor i think tri fire is a waste of money.

Yea I thought the same thing, I was thinking of getting a bigger monitor after 6990. But if I buy say a 120hz 23 inch monitor and just use 2 6970s to play everything on ultra would that work out better than spending the extra cash?

thats should work, and if it isnt enough, you could just add another 6970 and itll will be pretty much the same as the 6990+6970. I want the 6990 though because it saves me the price of an extra waterblock
