AMD X2 unlock/re-locked issue

Hello all. I decided to join here after seeing the amount of knowledge you guys have and am hoping you can help. I've done searching here and also looked elsewhere for help with my situation but it seems slightly unique. I have an AMD X2 Phenom BE and a Gigabyte GA-970a-D3 motherboard with 8GB/1600 Corsair RAM.

I was able to unlock the 3rd and 4th core successfully and booted into Windows 7 x64 with no issues. Everything was fine. After playing some video though, Windows just froze completely and I had to hard restart the machine. Figured it was the cores so i relocked the CPU and used just the 2 cores. Oddly enough, a couple days later, it froze again and I only have the normal 2 cores. I actually thought this was a GOOD thing because I thought it might mean that its not the cores but something else. So I read it could possibly have to do with the timing. I tried tweaking the RAM timing setting in the BIOS, increased my Vcore to 1.54 and took my RAM to Manual from Auto and now the timing is running at 11-11-11-29 as opposed to the 9-9-9-24. All is working ok (so far) however I tried re-enabling the other cores and as soon as I run Prime 95, it freezes. So herein lies my question....

Is it possible that my cores are ok if I get this far into Windows and my issue is something else? I'm a little lost with the massive amount of options in the BIOS and am hoping I may still have a chance, especially if my machine freezes again with just 2 cores being on. Sorry for the long post, but if anyone could share some advice, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

What kind of an overclock is the CPU running on?

'Successful' unlocks usually require extra voltage to be pumped through the CPU. It sounds like your CPU requires more voltage to be stable. Pump it up, but don't go beyond 1.55V (max safe voltage for PIIs).

Post back if you're still having trouble.

EDIT: Your mobo lacks VRM cooling, so don't go too far with the voltages. Make sure you're monitoring your temps for every Prime95 test, and make sure it's in the safe zone.

I would go into bios and reset to default and start over. 1.52v is too much. What cooler do you have? I am assuming stock -> don't worry about oc'ing until you upgrade. Unlock is ok, but that is all. After resetting to factory defaults, try adding only a single core. Then, run prime for at least 30 min with HWmonitor open and cpuz open to monitor your temps and verify that the cpu in unlocked. If bsod, try again with same core unlock setting (ie same core unlocked), and up your v-core by one notch. Repeat. Do this until it is stable. If the core is good, go back into bios and lock that core back down and try the other. Do the same thing as above. You should not have to go over about 1.48v (max I would go with stock cooler). If you do, go back to original 2 cores and enjoy. Not all cpus unlock.
It's so little!

Thanks so much to all of you responding. I bought another Heatsink fan which was a Vortex 945 (Cooler Master , also). I have never received a BSOD from this yet. The only issue is Windows just freezes. It does this only when running tests or some video. Prime95 especially. As soon as I start the test, it freezes within a second or two. If I am not running video or a test, everything seems to be ok. It will show X4 and all cores look ok. It is only when adding any additional stress on it that this happens. This particular motherboard has so many voltage settings, it's insane. I will try the max suggested here for the Vcore which was 1.55 and post back. But is it safe to say that if I can unlock these additional cores and do basic things, that I will eventually be able to achieve stability? I'm not even trying to overclock at this point, I only want to get it running all 4 cores stable. Thanks so much guys for helping!

If 4 cores don't work, try with 3 cores enabled. You will hardly notice a difference, and the voltage will undoubtedly be lower (less heat, more overclocking headroom).
