Man, you are giving so much helpful information. Thank you.

hehe rep me if you find it useful ;D

Here is a screenshot with my other 2 cores unlocked. I want to try the -2% decrements you talked about earlier but there doesnt seem to be an option for individual cores in the BIOS. Is it possible to do this with AMD Overdrive? Also, can you see anything I may be able to tweak in the screenshot that may give me more stability?

You USED to be able to do it with Overdrive... I believe version 3.2 or so. The one we have is 4.0. It had a black skin instead of a white one and no "FX vision" logo. You may still be able to find it on oldos or something, search "Amd Overdrive Old version". If you decide to install it, make sure you reset your settings to default in your current overdrive, uninstall it and reboot it.

The core voltage may be the issue.
To me it looks like you have Cool N Quiet enabled. This scales back your cpu frequency and voltage when the CPU is idle to save power. I notice in AOD it says your cpu freq is 800mhz- this is how I could tell.

I'm pretty sure I built another system (for my sister, it's upstairs) using a gigabyte board and having Cool N Quiet on while unlocked caused similar problems...

Disable Cool N Quiet in your BIOS, you don't need it, and all the frequency and voltage jumping around causes issues with Windows (BSODs, hanging).

Additionally you really should look into updating your bios if you haven't already,

HERE
is a link to your motherboard owners club with lots of useful info, and HERE is a direct link to your motherboard manufacturers website and BIOS download page for your motherboard.

Before updating your bios find out what BIOS version you have already- should say it on your boot screen or in the bios main screen itself. The latest BIOS according to Gigabyte's page is F7, there's a newer beta one I wouldn't use that's F8d, if you have any BIOS other than F7 I would recommend updating it.

Again, good luck, and hope this helps. Disabling Cool N Quiet might just solve all your issues, here's hoping.

OK I disabled the cool n quiet and also the C1E. I enabled the SB Spectrum in the 'hidden' area of the BIOS as well (Ctrl + F1). Something changed.....it froze within a minute while I was replying to this post. smile.gif

I attached a couple shots of the voltage settings in my BIOS.

700

700

Anything sticking out in this?
The SB spectrum I'm totally unfamiliar with. I would disable it again if you think it's causing problems.

Everything else looks normal.

However, it could be any number of things, including RAM Timing and voltage. Older/lower end Phenom II's can be picky with DDR3 above 1333mhz from what I've read. Try double checking your RAM settings.

Did you check into the BIOS?

Yeah I checked and had downloaded the latest BIOS from GB when you had orginally asked me to. Sorry, forgot to mention that. . One thing I noticed after you pointed out about cool n quiet taking my speed to 800Mhz was to the right of it, it says Core Multiplier 4X, but when I relocked the cores and disabled the cool n quiet, the core multiplier now says 16X. Im going to disable the SB Spectrum and lower my RAM to 1066 plus raise the Vcore to 1.55. I'll let you know what happens.

**edit** No dice....froze again.

Yes, Cool N Quiet automatically changes your multiplier and voltage... the 800mhz core would be a 4x multi, your frontside bus/HT reference clock is 200mhz so 200mhz x 4x multi = 800mhz..

Try unlocking all cores, turn off CnQ, put RAM to 1333mhz, vcore to 1.425.

Look up your RAM's voltage and timings and see if they are being set correctly by the bios automatically (they might not be, and it would cause these problems).

Manually set the timing (CAS, tRAS, tRCP, etc... look it up... they are probably 9-9-9-24 but you NEED to look up your specific RAM timing and set it), set ram to 1600mhz, manually set your DRAM voltage to manufacturer specs.

Update your bios too.

Wow hours of searching and here we go. So glad to find someone with identical problem. After unlock everything seems to run fine but prime95 instant crush on the start up.
My set up is:
AMD 555 black ed
G Skill G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series F3-10666CL9D-8GBXL
GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3
HIS H677FN1GD Radeon HD 6770

ok so what i have done so far is get a new heatsink Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus as iv read that it could be due to overheating(the stock one is **** anyways.) That didn't do anything. After much research i found some forms saying that the gigabyte 970 mobo's are designed for the new fx cores and are ****ty at unlocking phenoms. (and most of the ppl that i saw on forms that were with that problem did have 550's or 555's with gigabytes but still some didn't) Either way i also tried unlocking three cores at a time which seemed to work (through a short mixed prime95 test then i stopped it) so i thought that the fourth core might be bad. After locking other two and trying out the 'bad' one it went through the test again. Therefore im convinced that the CPU should be fine and going to try the memory thing.
Yes, try making sure your RAM timing, frequency, ratio and voltage are all set properly. Also check things like HT ref clock. If available, adjust ACC to -2%

Again, unlocking is NOT guaranteed, I'm lucky I have a piece of good batch in my rig (I'd assume) as my 555 runs 4.1ghz 24/7 as quad and never hiccups.

Worst case scenario, sell it and get a 965be or 1090t used from someone here....which will probably play more nicely with your 970 chipsets. My ASUS board was bought on prior research of it being a known excellent core unlocker, it's also an older chipset (785G), the 555 is also an older cpu... I can't vouch for Gigabyte, Biostar, etc as my only experiences with them have been bad.

Some cpus just won't unlock... I've given about as much advice as I can. Update bios, manually set RAM timing, leave cpu vcore alone or slightly above stock..

Yea actually i switched from a 785g it worked just fine unlocking my Athlon to a quad core but recently the msi mobo just randomly burned so i decided that ima fix it up and give to my bro for christmas and build a new rig for my self which brought crap load of headaches as u see. I decided to start with messing around with one thing at a time before going to pass out. I started with memory, as defoult it was good so i messed with voltages. at 1.45 the pc froze on browser start up but at 1.65 prime95 still freezes instantly. changing it to 1066 didnt do it either. DAMN YOU EVIL CPU/MOBO/orMEM!!!

This is great. I know we are going to get closer to finding a solution especially with someone else on board (no pun intended). I am also convinced that the CPU is fine but has more to do with the voltage settings somehow. Neurotix, I tried all you suggested but still get the same result :-\ Updated BIOS tried changing RAM speed at 1066, 1333 and 1600. All the same result.

Ok so over night i bumped up voltage for cpu and mem just a bit and tried to run prime over night. when i woke up the pc was frozen and it looked like it worked for about 3 hours. right now im running prime on default settings its been about 4 hours now no problems its been at about 45-50C. Since i have finals coming up I don't have that much free time but in the next week im going to switch back the cpu to my old athlon which i had unlocked for a year now and see if it could be the 870 mobo as i read somewhere online or the cpu it self. also still going to keep on tweaking the bios and keeping you posted.
