Has ASUS Falsely Advertised this product? M4A87TD/USB3 [God Help me]]

As a disclaimer, I hope I'm wrong because I've bought ASUS my entire life but I'm not expert like you guys are. Hopefully I'm just not understanding it correctly.

I've been trying to figure out performance issues forever and think I've aged 10 years in the last week. I've read the internet from cover to cover and am aware of the VRM's, the throttling, the voltage situations, and LAN drivers. I've decided I HAVE to ask the questions now because my brain can't handle anymore research. Please ask me questions because I would love to supply you with the necessary information so that we can resolve this problem. There will no doubt be others that find this post using Google because this problem is everywhere with this mobo.
According to my benchmarks, my system is ~25% slower than it should be. It's not unstable, no BSOD's, and actually performs decent on older stuff. After updating every bios and driver I had, I saw a common denominator on other message boards being about SATA IDE drivers.
So I investigated.

As you can see the ASUS m4A87TD/USB3 has an AMD 870 + SB850 chipset
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD...specifications

Here are the latest chipset (a year old) drivers on Asus site:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12298137/ocforum1.PNG

After installing these drivers if I goto DEVICE MANAGER my SATA IDE CONTROLLERS are just the Standard MS ones from 2006. No problem! Hey! AMD just released new Catalyst drivers that are supposed to have a nice updated driver of the South Bridge (SB850) that's supposed to open some pipes up.

I install those and now my device manager says this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12298137/ocforum1.PNG

Cool, AMD SATA Driver is there but the other things are default. I research that a little bit and this is where it gets interesting:

I Run AIDA64 and discover a discrepancy with my Chipset hardware ID's:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12298137/aidabridge.PNG

Perhaps I'm overreacting or just completely misunderstanding the situation but I thought I was supposed to have the 870 Northbridge? (Again I'm just now learning of all this). I've found a couple other links on the subject.

Check these out:
Overclockers.com
http://www.overclockers.com/amd-sb85...imited-supply/ (I've heard ASUS debunked this but - well, I dunno)

Some Techie on a StarCraft 2 forum
http://starcraft2forum.org/forums/sh...ad.php?t=20623

Someone asking AIDA about this:
http://forums.aida64.com/index.php?/...-asus-m4a87td/

TL;DR
I'm getting ready to reinstall Windows 7. Which Chipset drivers do I install?

AIDA64 is probably detecting it wrong... Check CPU-Z Mainboard tab. I'm sure Asus is selling a 870 + SB850 board if that's what they claim. It would be incredibly stupid to sell a board with a different chipset labeled as such, and Asus (as well as any other mobo manufactuer) has been around long enough and is reputable to not do stuff like that. Also, you shouldn't need to install any chipset drivers for Windows 7, unless you are using RAID. What functionality doesn't work out of the box that needs updating? Also what do you mean by "open some pipes up"?

Cpuid does indeed report that - huh. The links at the bottom of my original post made me think otherwise. From what I've read, I thought you should always install the chipset drivers (I've even read that here), AMD seemingly even includes the SB and AHCI driver in their Catalyst releases don't they? By opening pipes I mean increasing performance, my system isn't performing up to spec and temps are fine and everything is updated. My obsession with fixing it zeroed me in on the SATA performance of my mobo. I could be wrong and I don't remember what caused me to look into it because I read a lot of stuff.

edit: can't believe I didn't look at another program identifying the NB.....

AMD RX780 is the codename for the 770 northbridge.

since the 870 is just a straight up rebrand of the 770, ADIDA is probably just reading it wrong.

It really wouldn't matter if you got a 770 board, or an 870 board, they are exactly the same.

In what regards is it not performing? I still don't understand. Run a benchmark like HDtune (best thing indicative of SB performance, since SB controls SATA and therefore the HDD speed is key) , you will see performance before and after unnecessary drivers installed are the same. Installing chipset drivers isn't going to make your CPU, RAM, or video card any faster; it should only be installed if you don't have compatibility.

Also don't forget to fill out your complete system specs (go to User CP -> Edit System)

edit: I don't know if they are NB or SB drivers or what, but still not going to make a difference. I assume SB the way my post is written.

Yea, I'm realizing that - thought I was onto something. Now I'm back to square one trying to figure out why performance is sluggish on this machine compared to similar builds. ugh

Ok, I filled our some of the info for ya and ran HD Tune and got this:

I'm not sure how that stacks up. Sorry you're not understanding me, I took a crash course in all of this in a week and clearly read a lot of misinformation as well.

As for what's not performing, all 3D applications pretty much. My Benchmarks are a lot lower in most games than they should be according to benchmarks of similar systems (that I read at various sites). I get around 35 FPS in BF3 @1920x1080 no AA everything MED, shadows low. My Cinebench CPU score is 4.3, etc etc

I'm pretty resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to reinstall windows now that you mentioned I shouldn't have installed chipset drivers - because I've installed and uninstalled a bunch of stuff the past couple of days.

I tell you what, would you mind looking here:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD...USB3/#download

and tell me what I should install after a fresh reformat (assuming that's the route I go), under the presumption that everything seems to work fine. Is the answer nothing?

...I've always heard to keep your drivers updated. Not only for compatibility but for performance increases.
