ok so I tried to flash using the winati flash tool.. and it worked.. flashing wise... but it said this version of the bios already installed. It was the stock pulled bios from bios option 2 switch... which for the first card was the 6970 unlocked one...

So does this mean its a laser one and I am screwed? or should I try another bios and cross my fingers?

If it's laser cut, there is no BIOS will be able to unlock the extra shaders which does not exist. Just be happy with it. No need to do something else. Thanks

Do we have a way to identify if it's in fact laser cut?

Yep ... and you JUST DID IT ... you got one good card (Unlockable) one bad card (Locked) them's the breaks ... I keep telling people the DIRT3 cards are about a 33-50% chance at unlocking ... you got 50% and proved my point .

At this point you have really only 2 options, live with what you have and be happy, you can OC both and still have a great X-Fire set-up with performance that will just be a slight notch below 2 6970's ...

OR ... you could try and return the Unlockable card, and get another one, either another Dirt3 card or one with a better chance at Unlocking like the Sapphire TOXIC edition (about a 66-75% success rate) or the MSI PE/OC TwinFrozrIII (about 50-66% rate) ... or get spend the extra bucks and get the Sapphire HD-6970 (100% chance) it's about the cheapest 6970 on NewEgg $320 w/ Rebate that expires OCT 31 so HURRY if this is what you want to do.

Getting another UnLocked card, or a true 6970 along with the Unlocked Dirt3 card you now have will give you X-fire performance levels equal to TWO 6970's once you OC that Dirt3 card to 880/1375.

GOOD LUCK

Ok, I am not ready to give up just yet lol... to clarify... I tried to flash the *unlockable* card with the bios in mode 2 or the switch set to 2... am I supposed to flash it like that or in bios mode 1 switch set to 1? sorry just trying to cover all bases before I return this card and get another one or that 6970..

thanks!

You still really didn't make clear What you did ... did you try to flip the BIOS Switch on both cards one at a time first ? or where you impatient and thought you knew what you were doing so you just went ahead and tried to FLASH both cards right from the start ?

The DIRT3 cards don't NEED to be FLASHED to UNLOCK them ! the unlocked shaders are on the 2nd BIOS, ... but like I said ... IF you just went and FLASHED an incompatible BIOS over that 2nd BIOS ... then you've potentionally messed up your card, and it's going to take some major effort to correct this.

And obviously the other FACT could be you have one card with Laser Cut GPU/locked BIOS and therefore NOTHING YOU DO will UNLOCK THIS CARD !

Understood.. I didn't try to flash them in bios 2 with an aftermarket bios per say..I tried to flash the one that is not unlocked with the pulled 6970 bios switch 2 bios number 2 via the switch on the card. the card are still running fine in bios 2 mode.. switched to bios 2...

Cards are going back tomorrow... 40 more bucks and I can have that 6970... I think that is worth the headache that I causing myself and the members here at OCN lol

Thanks everyone for your help..

Sorry pestypest ... yeah it sounds like you got ONE UNLOCKER and ONE LOCKED, or 50% odds which is what I tend to tell people to expect from the DIRT3 card. Some get lucky and get 2 that unlock some don't get any ... it tends to even out though to the 33-50% range.

Anyways, so you're sending the ONE card back and replacing it with a true HD-6970 ? I think that makes sense if what you were after was ultimately DUAL HD-6970's in X-Fire ... hey at least ONE of the DIRT3 cards Unlocked and you saved 1/2 that extra expense

Sorry it only 1/2 way worked out for you.

Its cool.. I am glad one did at all.. kinda neat to have something work every once in a while.. Hey that 6970 you linked me to earlier up... How is the cooling on that compared to the cards I have atm? I hear that that cooling is a little better cause the exhaust exits the back...

Just curious

Thanks for the help!
