i5 2500k oc usefull?

Thread Starter
hi. i have an i5 2500k and a 6950 1gb. i oc my gpu to 900/1400 at stock voltage. when i play battlefield 3 my gpu is at 100% constantly. the cpu is stock right now so it boosts to 3.7ghz while playing. this is what my cpu usage looks like.

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/5905/bf3cpu.png

so my question is, should i overclock it? i hear the 2500k overclock really easily. i have a hyper 212 plus on it right now and while playing bf3 it only goes up to 52c so i dont think temp would be an issue. i just dont know if it would do anything since my gpu is the bottleneck. also, if i did oc it, would i just be increasing the frequency that it would go to when turbo boost kicks in?

for example, if i were to oc to 4.5, would it be at 4.5 constantly or would it still stay at the stock 3.4 and be able to boost to 4.5 when needed.

a cpu by definition couldnt be bottlenecked by a GPU, because of its one way design.

It will idle at 1.3ghz and then go up to 4.5, if you are using the energy effeciency settings and the dynamic voltage.

Yea your Cpu will boost to the desired frequency when it is needed you should be fine at auto overclock up to 4.5 just check for all cores and change the multiplier to 45.

Yeah whats happening is alot of people are running around with their heads cut off not understanding the bottleneck is game specific and not actually to do with the processor versus gpu.

You got a k processor, so you have to overclock it, thats the point of having one unlocked. Mine has power savings on, so when it is rendering stuff it kicks to 4.5Ghz, when it idles, 1.xx Ghz. You should be able to get the 2500k to 4.5Ghz with the 212 plus, unless you have a mutt for a chip/

so i would see a performance increase? disregarding that my gpu is at 100%, the way im looking at it is that my cpu is doing everything that bf3 is asking of it and still doesnt have to go 100%. or should i be looking at it as the cpu will be doing the same number of processes as before but this time it will be doing them faster since the clock speed is faster.

edit: also, what is a good program so monitor the clock speed?

Cpu-z for voltage and clock speed. Real temp for temp. monitoring. Download the most recent version 3.69.1. Prime95 for stability testing. The question to ask yourself is why not? Really easy to get a mild overclock on that chip.

You mentioned you are playing BF3. Overclocking the cpu will make at most a 1 fps difference for that game. Check out this awesome article from Tom's Hardware. Towards the end of the review they also test different processors, and the result is it makes basically no difference in BF3.

That said, this is Overclock.net. Of course you should overclock it!

You will not see a significant performance improvement in BF3. You might in some other games, and you certainly would in specifically CPU intensive tasks. But in BF3, the limiting factor in almost all systems is the GPU.
