How to access Win 7 Homegroup from Ubuntu 11.10?

Thread Starter
As in title...

Got Ubuntu on a laptop and want to access my sig rig i.e. stream videos over home wifi network.

I've added all media to the WMP library and shared all folders etc. It works perfectly to Win 7 laptops but no idea how to do it to to Ubuntu.

Thanks a lot

You can't access "Homegroup", but you can access the network.
Homegroup is a feature that only Win7 has and supports, and is meant to streamline sharing, so you don't have to do any manual changes.
If you want to stream to Ubuntu, you have to make manual changes.
Right-click on the folder you want to share, open Properties, go to Sharing -> Advanced Sharing, and select Share this Folder.

Now it should be visible to Ubuntu through network.

After you click on the share button you need to then click on the Permissions button. By default you will only be able to read. Check modify or write as needed for your network for that folder.

Thanks.

I realise Homegroup is purely a MS (Win 7) feature. Just want something similar i.e. open the folder on the 2nd machine, double click, have it stream with the default software.

How / where is the network in Ubuntu?

Thanks again
