Which Router?

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

I have recently changed ISP's and the coverage on the new Orange Wireless N Router is quite shocking, so I'm looking for something fast with a decent range.

Here is the deal I have http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/buy...?_cid=54732273 so if someone could check the compatability of the router for me.

Could I just get a Netgear rangemax and plug that straight into the wall? Surely I need some form of modem?

Also, could anyone tell me if I'm on ADSL or ADSL2+?

Thank you

MaK

You can just disable the wireless of ur modem and get a E3000 linksys router, its the best there is

ADSL = up to 8mbit
ADSL+ = 12mbit
VDSL = up to 24mbit

iirc.

Can't afford that and also,

I am only getting 7mbps (only had the broadband a few days) which would indicate ADSL - however, Orange told me that my line is capable of 18mbps and so I should receive between 13mbps and 17mbps all the time - which would indicate the VDSL you mentioned.

yea it should be VDSL, but it can happen that the unit is like 4 miles away then your speed would drop to like 7 mbit

The exchange is on my street. Maybe 20 metres from my house. Do I need a VDSL router then, or would a normal ADSL netgear rangemax be ok?

I would say just keep the modem as a Modem. You don't wanna really stress one unit instead of just offloading it to multiple devices. As for the E3000 it wasn't hugely stable since i had the E2000 and wouldn't be able to support the amount of connections that I needed. They improved it quite a bit with their new series of Linksys/Cisco Routers so i'd say check those out.

As long as the router can support the speeds VDSL gives, Then you should be fine.

How about this netgear rangemax? This says it's ADSL2+ but does I've got a feeling that doesn't mean It's limited to 12mbps.

http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/vie...le=Description

What I'm really asking is, could.I replace my current modem/router with this one and still obtain up to 20mbps but increase my wireless range?

Thank you to all for the advice. Rep will be given out at the end.
