What, really!?
The 41XX chips are great chips.
While consuming less power than a Phenom II x4, they will clock higher and perform at the same level or better at those higher clocks.

According to this it would be more of a side grade.

Also Bulldozer quad cores really only have 2 fpu's so unless a 5ghz-5.1 ghz overclock is possible then i wouldnt buy

Looking good Burz, now your cooking with gas! By the way, I myself am waiting for the 4170. Not sure I would spend the money to upgrade if I was already running a 955 though. If you want to go for the 4170 and have the $, don't be discouraged by the FX bashers. Haters are gonna hate, it's that simple.

Not haters gonna hate.
The fact is the quad core bulldozer has the same Ipc of a phenom core. So why spend a 100bucks on something you already have?
also overclocking the 4170 would take some volts and a good cooling solution and by that time you could throw the whole efficiency argument out the window.

It would be a smarter idea to wait for the second revision and see what improvements amd has made.
Thats why you stated yourself that if you already have a 955 that its a side grade.
So please dont come into the forum trying to troll. Especially when it involves somebody taking your advice on there next purchase. not cool.

FX fanboi.

PH2 x4 @ 4ghz > FX @ 5ghz.

No brainer. Especially considering he already has a x4. Bad reccomendation.

I'm running an i7 system. However, comparing speed per clock on two entirely different architectures is misleading. The fact is that the FX 4170 (on stock) performs similarly to the Phenom II 980 (on stock). I would imagine that they can both be overclocked to a similar percentage. Because the architectures are completely different, you can't compare clock for clock. You really need to be thinking about how they compare at stock and how they compare when overclocked by a specific percentage.

I think Bulldozer has a great deal of potential and could conceivably compete with the i7 platform, just not right now. That being said, I would not buy ANY FX product right now. Every single FX chip is more expensive than an Intel equivalent and vastly more expensive than the older generation of AMD processors. It is a new architecture. With a revision it will improve significantly, possibly dramatically.

According to all of the benchmarks I've seen, the FX 8150 (at stock) is roughly as powerful as an i7 930 (at stock) or an i5 2500k (at stock). Both of these CPU's are far cheaper (especially if you go used). The FX 4170 is about as powerful as Phenom II 980 or a Q9550. Again, both of those are cheaper (especially if you go used).

I think what has happened is that both Intel and AMD screwed up and now are in a price war. With Intel selling too low and not able to raise their prices because they've already released Sandy Bridge and AMD selling too high for Bulldozer and not being able to lower the prices because they need to make a profit. I think if Intel had known what Bulldozer was really going to do, we would be seeing the i7 2600k at the same price point that the i7 extremes were selling at a few years ago.
