Windows says: 12GB ram installed, only 8GB usable with my OC. Help is needed :-)

Hi guys,

My OC has run stable at 4,15ghz on my i7 930 for over a year now.
It began to stutter a bit when editing HD material, and lots of it, so I bought double up on the memory and went from 6gb to 12gb.
Thing is, when I have the OC enabled, it only counts 8gb of ram, and when I take it off, it reads the correct 12 gb ram!
How in earth can this be?

I really hope some of you OC guru's can help! I'm kind of lost, and I want my damn memory AND the OC wink.gifwink.gif

Thanks in advance
Viktor

Below is my system, and the bios settings:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
RAM: Corsair DDR3 PC1600 6GB CL7 i7 kit x2
GFX: MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr
- I guess that was it worthy to mention regarding this problem.

Incorrect QPI/VTT voltage. Sometimes i7s (first gen, like 920,930,etc...) have a picky memory controller where they like a certain difference between dram voltage and QPI/VTT, so mess around with those two voltages and you should be good. For a full and over-comprehensive guide check here: http://i4memory.com/ramdetect

Dopamin3: Thanks man! I'll try it. Do you have any suggestion to the correct values?

TheSocialHermit: Yeah, ofc I did some googling before posting, and I have windows 7 ultimate, so it should support the ram!

Try around 1.4-1.42v.

Also increase your DRAM Voltage to 1.66v due to vdrop.

your oc has become unstale with the added ram.
good info about this below.

Not a software or OS issue if it's showing up in BIOS.

I would try Dopamin's suggestion and adjust QPI/VTT voltage. If that doesn't help, make sure the memory is seated correctly.

You may also need loosen round trip latency and tRFC subtimings to get six DIMMs to work properly.

Thanks for all the posts!

The settings are now:
QPI/VTT: 1.395v
DRAM: 1.66v

- and it still only counts 8gb ram!
How high can I crank that QPI?
The RAM freq is at 1568, and the Uncore is at 3528, so i'm in that 2:1 ratio.

Blameless: Regarding RAM-timings, i'm really a newbie... Do you have any sugestions on how to loosen them?
I love my i7!
