GTX 460 2WIN Sli Problems

Thread Starter
Hi guys, about a month ago I bought an EVGA Gtx 460 2win off of Newegg for my new comp build. For the first couple of weeks the card was working very well and I was very pleased with its performance. However, the last couple of weeks the card frequently refuses to enable SLI and only 1 out of 2 GPU's are detected. At first I would fix this problem by reinstalling the drivers however the problem would reoccur after rebooting. I then decided to RMA the card back to EVGA which was approved by them. They sent me back a new GTX 460 2win but however, the card still sometimes refuses the SLI. I have tried switch PCI-E lanes, using different power cables, and different drivers. I am seriously about to pull my hair out guys. Any help would be VERY appreciated!!

Summary: GTX 460 2WIN refuses to sli and only 1 gpu is detected.

I have an attached picture of my NVIDIA control panel, device manager, and CPU-Z look like without any SLI enabled or the second GPU being detected.

Sorry for replying so late.
@hertz9753 When I go into set up multiple monitors, it gives me an option to configure my Viewsonic monitor or my Dell monitor. I actually have 3 monitors in total connected to my GPU so i'm guessing since the second GTX 460 is not detected, my third monitor is no as well.

@ekg84 I'm pretty sure its nothing to do with software. It is HIGHLY unlikely that I would get two faulty cards in a row. The current one i'm using is only about 5 days old.

Is your NIC driver made by Realtek? If so, roll back to a different driver like the original Windows NIC driver. Sounds odd, I know, but ... those symptoms sound very much like the good ol' Realtek NIC driver/SLI bug that plagued a lot of us last year.

And I think you meant it's unlikely to be HARDWARE ... since you've replaced the card via RMA. And w/that I would agree. It's much more likely to be some type of software (i.e. driver) problem. Do you have an extra HD you could throw a fresh copy of Windows on, just to see if that fixes it? Also try disconnecting the 3rd monitor, just to see if that changes anything. A safe-mode driver sweep would be worth a try as well.

@brettjv I don't really know if I have Realtek NIC drivers or not. According to Device Manager i have Intel ones but i could be wrong. If i were to have Realtek drivers, will i uninstall them from Device Manager? And how will i find the "original windows NIC driver" to install? I really do hope its the Realtek NIC bug :0
As of typing this, SLI is ENABLED only because sometimes on reboot, my Windows/Nvidia decides to re-enable it yet it also disables SLI every now and then too.
And yes, I do mean it to be HARDWARE and not SOFTWARE XD Thanks for pointing it out and Thank you very much for your input! It drives me crazy trying the get SLi to work. I've reinstalled the drivers about 30-40 times since I built my comp last month.

@SoapDaManz, I am in the exact same boat, this is a pain in the behind process for a ton of people.

Recommended Actions:
Step one: Make sure adequate cooling is taking place. It will disable SLI and crash a ton if it over heats.
Step two: Install the drivers that came on the CD, not new ones.
Step three: Install SLI Patch (available from http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/670810-howto-sli-non-sli-motherboard-gtx5xx.html )
Step four: burn this file to a CD.
Step five: Install EVGA precision off the drivers CD.
Step six: Crank the fans to the max. The lower the temp on this picky as frick GPU the better.

Nvidia doesn't support this method, but no drivers seem to support this card. (Maybe cause it beats a 580 for 100 bucks less? Sketchy.)

@SniperTeamTango
Thanks for the help but I think i'll just leave it the way it is. It usually takes 1-2 restarts to get sli working. My computer has not crashed at all since i got my GPU back from EVGA. If it restarting seems to fail, then I will definitely try this method! Once again thank you so much!

Not a problem mate. BTW are you using stock cooling on it? Or modded liquid cooling?
