Er, looks like something isn't right... even you through if your CPU cooler isn't installed correctly or missed some surfaces. it wouldn't hit 100'C maybe at 70'C.

At idle you're at 36'C that's the work of the headsink itself dissipating the heat and can be done without needing fan power. Similar temp on fanless heatsink.

Is the CPU cooler fan connected?

indeed it is. running as properly as I can see. I felt around the fan and it was pushing air out of the sides of the cpu. is that typically how a CPU cooler works?

How would I check if the fan is connected properly? Besides the temperature going down which would be AWESOME, is there something else I should be able to see?

The fan should be spinning and plugged into the plug on the motherboard that reads "CPUFAN" Most times it 4 pin, sometimes three pin, usually near the top of the board

With the stock cooler you should be able to hear it! I built my 965 system a week and half ago, and my biggest regret was cheaping out and hoping the stock cooler would be good enough. It's a noisy little bee, clearly audible in my "silent" R3 case, even when the machine is idle. Also, HWMonitor should be reporting a CPU fan speed, if it's connected correctly.

I'm getting ~36C idle, ~38C light use & ~48C gaming (mostly Guild Wars & Just Cause 2 at the moment). Prime 95 pushed me to 55C in 15 minutes, though, and I have no doubt it would have gone higher if I'd left it.

I plan on replacing my cooler in the next couple of months or so, but with yours I'd agree with those who've suggested reseating. The max safe temp on this CPU is 62, so 100 is pretty worrying. The stock cooler is crap, but it should be doing better than that!

I just checked by trying a different game, Saints Row 2. Was going well for about 10 min then after that I checked the temps and it was up at 95C. I really do not understand but maybe it is just the cooler. I hope it is. Rather spend 30 bucks then having to do some serious changes.

The stock cooler isn't very good, but should be doing better than that. I used the stock cooler briefly on my 955, and there was no room for overclocking. I bought the Coller Master Hyper N520 and it was slightly better. Got a Mugen2 and now everything is very nice indeed. Try reseating the stock cooler with some good thermal paste like mx-4, or get a decent aftermarket cooler.

Ok the number one culprit with heat like that is voltage and wattage. I have a MSI motherboard and they do have a known default to set the CPU on standard voltage like 1.5 or 1.45 but the Phenom 2 965 is designed to run at stock speed at around 1.35. You will have to check in the BIOS (press F2 when computer is booting) and manually configure it to 1.35. I had to set mine to lower voltage when I got my new 990fxa because it defaulted to 1.45. The stock cooler should be able to handle the stock specs. You may see higher temps when running Prime 95 or games (around 50-60 C) another thing to check and buy is the thermal paste like the other guys were talking about and a better heat sink. If the voltage doesn't work, if you have thermal paste, check to make sure it applied to cover the entire CPU and make sure there is non hanging over the edges.
