AMD Phenom II X4 Overheating - Page 5

Ok if you did the thermal paste let me know.
Check in your BIOS for a feature called active phase switching and see if it is enabled. Try it with that on and off to see if it works. I know by the way it suppose to work may be conflicting with a strong power supply or not regulating correctly.

ok it has been a while since I have made a post about what is going on.

First thank you for all the suggestions. Unfortunately money has been tight so I have not been able to try them all. Here is what I have done:

1.) Took the heatsink off and found gray crumbly ash pretty much underneath it so I cleaned that off and put some new thermal compound on it. Did not help.

2.) reorganized the wiring inside to hopefully promote better airflow. Did not help.

Things I will be doing in the near future:

1.) purchasing a new heatsink from coolermaster and see if that helps.

2.) praying to baby jesus...

3.) checking active phase switching thing that Godking7 mentioned.

I will keep you posted as best I can and thank you again for all your help.

also quick question: Is it possible that my motherboard is the reason that the CPU is overheating? maybe it is not able to keep itself in check? It is always running at about the same heat as the CPU which would make sense considering that it is right on the board but i thought there may be variable there I am missing.

Is there a newer BIOS for your MOBO? If there is, you may wanna give it a flash.

For the record, I think you've simply got a dud sensor reading via HWMonitor etc.

The recommended thermal limit is 62c, but they cut out at 70c usually.

Recently when I was playing Starcraft 2 for the first time, I had HWMonitor running to keep track of temps as I wanted to keep an eye on CPU/GPU usage. HWMonitor reported a high of 95c, however my RivaTuner G15 display, and Speedfan's CPU Temp log (saved as a .csv file) never showed it pass 37-38c.

No doubt something like a Hyper 212+ will do you great, I suggest downloading SpeedFan, and enabling CPU Temp (Temp1) logging via the Configure button. Do what you need to get a cut out, and check the log when you've restarted. It'll be in Programs X86, Speedfan. Can Open it with either Wordpad or MS Word etc. but I find Notepad to display it best.

It's not getting as high as your programs are saying, but let's see what temp SpeedFan shows it's really getting. I'm guessing it'll likely hit a high, then jump to the erroneous 95c+.

Well as much as I wish it was just the program, Speedfan checked me at 97c for Temp1 and 105c at Core. With temps like that, new thermal compound, and more space around the computer, do you guys think a new heatsink can make that much of a difference if I dont get one of the major $60.00+ heatsinks?

I have used three different programs to test the heat of the CPU. all of them are coming up with 90+ load. Is there an external device I could use to test the heat of the cpu while it is running to make sure that the sensors are correct or not? Is the sensors being wrong something I even have to worry about?

hmm..does the cpu fan spin up and whine? if not..under the monitor tab..make the cpu fan spin faster..also..disable cool and quiet..i'm thinking you don't have the cooler snapped on right... :thinking.gif: as for your videocard..they run notoriously hot..you should use rivatuner or afterburner to rev the fans up on that as well

The fan does not whine but I have it running at 100%. The GPU hits a max of 85 which I know is still hot but no where near what the CPU is hitting.

I am at a total loss right now. If the MB, CPU, and GPU are ALL hitting numbers WAAAAAY higher than what they should be, what could be the problem? I just turned off cool n quiet and the CPU and Core are running at 65 idle now, 20c higher than before so I am going to put that back on.

All of the suggestions up til now have been awesome so I thank you again for all your help. I just have zero idea what to do from here besides surround this thing with dry ice forever.

Just finished reading all the posts. man it sounds like your in a mess of a problem with your cpu. Im not sure but can those temperatures jsut be completely bogus numbers that your mother board is giving off? The automatic shutdown feature of the system when it reaches outrageous temps might be shutting down because the numbers its seeing is over the max limit. say the shutdown tempo is 85c or something Im jsut throwing that out there and there is false readings coming from the cpu or motherboard will it still cause it to shutdown? hope i explained that right. other than that im at a loss for answers. gl to ya man!

additional: if you could get a hold of something external to the system to get a temp reading and it still reads 70+ when your temps are up than its accurate but if you cant target a temperature over 60c or so with the thermal gun or whatever than it might just be bad readings?

If i get ahold of a thermal gun and decide to use it, where should I be taking the temp at? At the cpu under the fan area or somewhere else on the board? I also understand what you mean about the auto shutdown and my computer has done it a few times like a couple weeks back. I think it happened around 105c - 110c when it did which seemed really really odd to me! I figure anything above the damn BOILING POINT is AWFUL!!! I am going to try the new heatsink when the funds come in but for now I am kinda stuck. Thanks for the advice.
