Desk for Computer Use and Home Work Help

The Idea

Have a desk that
  • holds three 24 inch monitors.
  • illuminates my desk space.
  • has lights that turn on and off.
  • has storage.
  • and fits through my door to my room^^.
Description

My current mockup has 3 monitor stands. There is room to the right of these for my gaming computer. 2 Towers each comprised of 4 4x4s support the desktop. The towers also have room for storage. The slots you see on the monitor stands are where the cold cathodes will be to illuminate my desktop. Below the middle slot is a circle, that will be a button to turn the lights on and off. The desk itself will be painted a shiny black color.

The Problem With the Current Design

If I were to place a keyboard and mouse on my desktop, I would have no room to put school papers and homework. Also, there is nowhere for the cables to route through so the surface will be untidy.

The cold cathodes are meant to be plugged into a power supply. I want the desk to be powered by a wall outlet. How can I rewire the cathodes to be able to be plugged into an American power outlet?

The Purpose

I challenge you, OCN members, to offer ideas to improve my design and solve my current problems. I am a new modder with little experience as a carpenter, so keep ideas realistic to this. The budget is also pretty limited.

THANKS

add a pull out, hide-away table, mounted under desktop for keyboard and mouse.
as far as cc's depending on the voltage required to run them from psu, I belive you should be able to find them in documentation to the cc's you could possible get a universal dc adapter to plug into wall/power-strip and splice the cord with cc's power input.

Thanks. Do you know anywhere I can purchase the slides and surface that will hold the keybaord and mouse? Also where on the image should I mount it where it will look the best?

Plus I need to figure out cable management.

I would suggest centering it where center monitor would be. You could probably buy a hideaway table from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16848006107

If you never sat at a desk with hideaway table try one before you by one. I have long arms and my original hideaway was way too small to be used comfortably so consider making/buying one as large as possible, also pay attention to distance between desk surface and it, it can be very uncomfortable if you cant move your hands freely, I use my desk for work and keeping my hands on keyboard in hide position a lot, so I can reach my stuff. Mine is 60cm wide and 80 cm long.

My desk is a POS, I have enough room for monitor (set back) keyboard in front, mouse to the right.... to the left I have my ash tray, cd/dvd stack and a picture of me and my wife from our wedding in vegas

I guess if it does not fit correctly I could take out the wood that comes with it and throw in my own piece that is the correct size. I would have to take the wood out to repaint black anyways.

if that is the case, use a custom sized piece of plywood for your table.... that way you don't have to mount twice
