Looking For A SSD and Need Help

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade to an SSD. problem is, I see that most SSD's are Sata3 while my motherboard is only Sata2. What do I do? If I were to get a SATA3 SSD would I still function? What are the downsides and such? I've been reading a bit and it seems that a lot of members seem to prefer the Crucial M4.

It will work just fine. Its all backwards compatible. To avoid the bottleneck you can always get a Sata 3 pci e card. They are only around $30

The Crucial M4 is a beast of a SSD

M4 would work just fine on Sata II.

Buying an add on card just to get Sata III is a waste. The extra latency because of the card using the pci-e lanes will negate the benefits.

Someday when you upgrade boards, your new one will have Sata III controlled by the chipset which is how it sees it's full potential.

That's what I was thinking. But running on a SATA II board, around how much of a performance loss am I going to be seeing? I probably won't see it as a loss anyways since I'm using a Caviar Black 1TB drive now

M4 FTW! lol

It works fine on sata 2 i've had mine on sata 2 for a while.

270 MB/s seq reads and 19MB/s 4k reads

vs

500+ Seq and 24-27 4k reads

You will not notice the difference in real world use.

Crucial M4 - OCN suggested it to me about a month ago after my ADATA thing died, and I couldn't be happier!
