Do built in microphones on headsets work on computers?

For example the apple headphones + mic, does the microphone work when plugged into a sound card? How about onboard sound?

I doubt it. Those headphones with the three section connectors are designed to allow you to have a mic and headphones in a single jack for use in Apple devices, while on PCs the headphone and mic jacks are always separate.
