just a heads up, staying with an amd cpu will be fine

BF3 is not cpu limited at all apparently because even older i3 dual cores perform the same as a 2500k

I think for HDD prices you may want to shop somewhere else. Newegg definitely is reflecting the "shortage" and has risen prices accordingly. I'd almost recommend eBay... get some cheap drives that'll get you through until prices go back to normal.

2500k would totally be worth it over the AMD build, especially for only $75 difference.

tell me about it! I sit around for hours planning budgets of next rigs. Places to order from for the best deals/shipping combos. I have spreadsheets & word docs filled with plans. It's ridiculous how much I stress myself about what components to choose for next build. Haha.

Lol I like how Tomshardware hasnt made a CPU benchmark for BF3 at 1920x1080 resolution...1680x1050 is not difficult to run for the cpu and the performance will be largely down to graphics card in those tests. Also the Fx 8150 is $280, whereas the 2500k is $215. The OP is on a budget and theres no point in spending the extra $65 on the amd chip, when the intel 2500k is just as good and sadly in most cases better than it.

@Hawk, one of the best and cheapest 500gb hard drive is the samsung spinpoint F3 500gb drives, for some reason its deactivated on the egg. As for case, a semi decent and cheap one at $58 is the Antec 300.

I looked up the spinpoint f3 and I'm wondering if this site is legit or not.

^Hmm not sure buddy, hey dont you guys have that Black Friday coming up soon? Bet you could pick up some good deals in that.

I like your build OP and would suggest dropped the PSU to a lower wattage to save some money. Then look at a budget case like the Antec 300.

As for HDD, check the for sale section for some mechanical drives since prices have gone up. Once you save a little cash on a lower watt PSU you should be able to add a cheap case and a used mech. drive.

I also liked AMD955's Intel build back a page, except get the P8P67 Pro M and save a little $$

you can go cheaper with a 6870.

mine runs 60 fps on high, and 30-40 on ultra.

Yeah, I remembered that chart a few minutes before you posted it. This is what I came up with.

CPU/GPU: Intel Core i3-2100, HIS IceQ X Turbo Radeon HD 6950 2GB
Mobo: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB DDR3-1600
Case/PSU: Rosewill Challenger, Rosewill Green 530W (it's on the recommended PSU list)

Shipped: $652.81 (no rebates)

That leaves you with $47.19 for an HDD, which is admittedly tight in the current market. Do you have an old one you can use until the prices go back down?

According to that Tom's article, the 6950 gets about ~10fps more the the 560Ti. If you'd rather have the 560Ti for cost or fanboy reasons, there are two that have a combo with the i3-2100.

Intel Core i3-2100, MSI Trin Frozr II GTX 560 Ti (shipped build total $623.81, after rebate $603.81)
Intel Core i3-2100, EVGA SuperClocked GTX 560Ti (shipped build total $588.04, after rebate $572.04)

I think fitting a 2500k and a 560 Ti into a $700 build is going to be...difficult...with current HDD prices. Dropping to the cheaper 2100 allows you to get a better GPU and stay in the tight budget. I know the above chart is only at 1680x1050, but it looks like it can at least do decently at BF3 (and with the better GPU, it may even come out ahead). If, in a few months, you think the 2100 isn't quite up to speed, then you can simply sell it and upgrade to Ivy Bridge.

Happy hunting!
