Overhaul from Athlon64: Will this do me for 2-4 years?

See me sig for my embarrassingly slow system.

What do I use my PC for?
  • School work
  • Casual gaming (MicroVolts)
  • Photoshop here and there
  • Heavy internet surfing (imagine lots of tabs)

Why do I want to upgrade?
My current system can be sluggish to respond, especially during heavy internet usage with about a dozen YouTube tabs open. My current 2GB of RAM is obviously insufficient and I can see through Task Manager that my Page Filage is being eaten up.

I get acceptable frame rates with MicroVolts (online fps) and my CPU is the bottleneck for my 3870, so any upgrade will be beneficial either way. I don't plan on playing any "latest" games...maybe when GTA5 comes round, but that's a later story.

What do I propose?Grand total: $236 inc. tax

Does this sound reasonable? In terms of pricing and parts?
I'm visiting the states for a bit, and PC parts are much cheaper than in the UK. I know motherboards aren't cheap at MicroCentre, but they'll still cheaper than across the pond.

Will I be futureproof?
My main concern with the H61 board I picked out is it's lack of PCI and memory lanes. I understand future Ivy Bridge CPUs will just pop in my board in the future, but I will be limited for memory choice.

Will 8GB be enough for my uses? Or should I leave room to expand? (given that I reside in the Uk and not the US)

My thoughts were that I choose the cheapest SKT 1155 board out there, and when I upgrade the CPU, get a new/second hand board to go with it. Given that I can't OC the i3 2100, I don't see the point in paying $100+ on a motherboard.

Will I run into any problems with DOAs and/or future warantee problems?

Sorry for the long post!
Thanks in advance!

Future proof meaning what... for internet browsing, schoolwork, and photoshop then yes. For gaming, might not be so much the case. Are you going to use your 3870 in this rig?

Future proofing in terms of socket type/memory slots to allow for progressive upgrades in the future. For example, I saw the short death of the SKT 939 platform after AMD moved onto a new architecture...

I will indeed be carrying on with the 3870. I've got nothing else!

What do you think about my choice of motherboard? Should I go all out and get a decent mobo which I can use for a second CPU, or should I go with a cheap one which I can renew once I get a second CPU and need more features?

I generally try to go all out the first time... so I don't have to deal with the hassle of selling, losing some money, then upgrading. It all depends on the situation though. I think this is a decent budget build; budget builds just aren't my cup o tea really.

*peeks down at your sig*

Oh. I see.

I'm torn between getting the i3 2100 or the Phenom II X4 840 though. The later being $60, 40 dollars cheaper than the i3. I just don't want to invest money in a dying system. Decisions decisions decisions...

Also curious, how are you going to get these parts back across the pond? I think you're just asking for a pain, especially if you ever have to RMA.

I dunno, I'd recommend a P67 chipset over the H61, that's just me though. P67 allows a lot more options for later down the road, H61 seems pretty limited imo.

I've got a 2100 on a H61 board, awesome bang for buck setup. On par with my 955BE at stock.

Only major limitation of H61 chipset is the lack of RAID support, so if you want to do that down the road H67 might be better.

Not sure about warranty/RMA support, you would probably have to mail the parts back to the US if there is a problem so it's risky and could outweigh the money you save from buying parts here.

Thanks for the input guys!

I wasn't aware about the lack of RAID support! I might have to dish out some more cash after all then.

About the RMA support....what are the odds that I will have to return my CPU? I've heard of people getting bad mobos, but never a CPU that won't start. I mean...the CPU's warranty is limited in itself isn't it? For example, if your HSF's fan dies and your CPU fries, you couldn't claim anything could you?

I might just bag the processor and get my motherboard/memory in the UK. For an i3 2100, $99 is an awesome price. Costs £95 in the UK. ($153).

Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard of a CPU being DOA, should be pretty safe buying that here.
