hx750 on it's way out?

Thread Starter
hello all,

I bought my hx750 1/29/2010 from NE and it's been loyal to me ever since, i recently added another 470 to my system and it has been b*tchin. *edit: lol, i meant as in AWESOME*

PROBLEM:
I've logged 18 hrs this week of BF3 and just yesterday I started noticing a buzzing noise coming from my psu. for whatever reason i continued to play, it wasn't that loud and it went away; however, today it became much louder and persistent to the point that any stress in the graphics department and/or high stress on cpu brings the buzzing. I've read a LOT about this issue today and seen stuff about capacitors and coil whining and EXPLODING COMPUTERS...so I've sent in an RMA/tech support request to Corsair and powered off my comp--waiting until further guidance. I've played around w/ the 2 gpu's and am fairly certain that neither of them are the culprit (plugging my display into each/enabling&disabling SLI).

QUESTIONS:
1) am I overreacting by shutting off the computer and not using it until tech support is confident what it is? meaning, can i play w/ buzzing to my hearts content (w/ headphones) or should i not be an idiot and leave it alone for now--not risking any computer explosions?

2) I've been scouring the internet (NE and Amazon) for higher quality psu's...looking at ax750/x750 or ax850/x850 as possible upgrades (if RMA goes through, like it should, i'll put it into my brothers comp when he gets back from Iraq) What are your thoughts on this; should I go ahead and get a new one?
Any suggestions (750 vs. 850; ax vs. x)?

I/C:
freaking hate this situation right now, like everyone at overclock I take extreme care of my stuff and sort of get bent out of shape when things malfunction, or rather when I don't know what's going on and feel like I don't have enough information to make command decisions. I appreciate you guys so much for any advice.

[edit] i just purchased an x750, awesome deal on ne, figured i could cancel/return if necessary

well this news sucks considering I was looking at swapping my 560ti's for a 470 sli setup. bummer.

I hope it's not the PSU, but the condition of the PSU that has gone bad.

I just got a second 470, and I just bought a SeaSonic X750 for $135.96 including tax + shipping.

if you have an overclock on your GPU's take it back to stock.

My 750w antec is easily coping with my sli gtx580's if it's any help.

It sounds like coil whine. It's mostly common on gpu's but it's possible in a psu too. It shouldn't be dangerous unless it's an offbrand but I've never heard of a corsair exploding. At any rate, I'd say return it if you can just because the coil whine can get annoying and as you said it has gotten loud. It's not going to explode and if it can't handle the power draw for your system, it's only going to shut off because it does have many safety features and your system should be fine. Apply for a return with the retailer or RMA with corsair and just use the system until it's approved. I know corsair is pretty good with their RMA process and should replace it no problem.

The main thing to remember is that a psu doesn't have a million moving parts. Sound is caused by physical movements so it's most likely either coil whine or the fan is making the noise and neither of those is dangerous. Though some could argue that if something happens to the fan, the unit could overheat
