Need some advice on upgrading

Thread Starter
Current Build
  • GPU: ATi Radeon HD 5770
  • CPU: AMD II X2 250
  • RAM: 2GB DDR2
  • Motherboard: MSI 785GTM E45
  • PSU: 500W

I just simply want to know if I should upgrade my motherboard and what would be some of my options when it comes to upgrading the GPU and CPU and maybe even the Mobo. I plan to upgrade the RAM regardless.

Multiple choices would be appreciated and I'd prefer any online seller such as Newegg, Tigerdirect/CompUSA, etc. and this rig would be setup for the more common 'running games such as BF3 (medium+) at 60FPS' and a resolution of 1600x900. Really would prefer not to build a rig that would simply be overkill for what I need. Thanks in advance.

Motherboard wise, unless you want to upgrade, you should be fine. As for processor, you can go for a AMD x4 955BE or any type of quad above 2.5 ghz. Graphics wise, I would do a ATI 5850 or nVidia GTX 460. That would give you very respectable specs for a BF3 rig

Hope I helped

I'd say $500 would be the absolute max although like I said I don't want to go overboard with what I purchase.

I may, in the end, just end up upgrading the motherboard since it is a DDR2 RAM type but who knows this is more of a computer to at least nicely handle more recent games until I actually have the money to throw into a much better and thought out rig.

I think you can get a copy of win7 64 bit for pretty cheap if you already own 32 bit. You should check into that (google search, or contact microsoft), because the 32 bit version will probably limit the amount of memory you can address once you do this upgrade.

Beyond that, it really depends on your budget, I suggest the following:

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103995
CPU HSF: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103046
MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157272
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820313080
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161387

That's $409 shipped. CFX your 5770 with that 6770, and OC that 960T, should be able to hit ~3.8GHZ with ease, more with tinkering.
