Need help with motherboard choice for 580 Lightning Extreme SLI

Thread Starter
Hi i am currently deployed and im using my deployment money to build a rig when i get home during the first week of December. I have already purchased a case and a single MSI 580 Lightning Extreme 3GB and i plan on buying a second to SLI. I am having trouble finding articles or threads about a good motherboard to SLI these on that provides enough spacing between for cooling. Now i am going with an Intel 1155 socket probably an i7 2600k CPU. I also know that the cards are wide/thick so i need a board with a lot of slots or 2/3 slots that are spaced enough for at least a single slot space between. Here is what i have been looking at or whats currently in my cart on Newegg.

ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard

Anyone with this card setup or more knowledge on what would be a better buy for spacing please feel free to leave feedback. Any and all tips are appreciated, this is my first build. Thank you

Yeah i had someone else point me in the ASROCK direction. Im just not very familiar with them and i also heard that the NF200 chip wasnt really as good as it was supposed to be. I def like that board though, price isnt too bad either.

Asrock Extreme7 Gen3, my board 16x/16x, 16x/8x/8x. with PCI-e 3.0 x support. It also does Tri-SLI Plus, it is cheaper than the Asus, Looks better imo with black & gold accents, and overclocks very well. It also has video output, unlike Asus M-Z.

Though to be honest, you could have gone with sth like Extreme4, or P8Z68 as 8x vs 16x, has virtually no performance drop at all.

Really appreciate the feedback since this is my first build and ive been going back and forth on mother boards for the last month or two. I still have about 3 weeks left til im going to purchase my 2nd GPU and motherboard and everything else involved in the build. I think the Asrock Extreme7 is really good and for that price as well. Maybe the x79 or whatever will come out before i have to buy all my stuff.
