Much needed upgrade

Thread Starter
So as you can see from my sig rig i have not upgraded much in about 4 to 5 years. I am looking to upgrade my cpu, mobo and ram. i just need some advise on what mobos and ram i should get. The two CPUs im looking at are the i5 2500K and the i7 2600k. Im leaning more towards the i7 for a little better future proofing because i am uncertain when ill be able to upgrade again.

The last day i have been catching up on the cpu technology. I see IB is coming out within the next year and was hoping to get a mobo that has a possibility to support the IB features if i can upgrade later on. IF not no loss since i know in a matter of weeks in this field everything can change.

Also i am trying to stay in the 600 to 700 dollar range, this includes cpu, mobo and ram

THanks

lol, looks like you and I are in the same boat. I went w/ this ASRock and am definitely nervous about my new build. I went with the i5 2500k since I got a decent deal. To help future-proof you might want to go w/ the z68 chipset
here is the board i am waiting to arrive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157271

i think gigabyte has a nice one too w the z68

What is the intended use of said system?

While I understand that you are probably hankering for an upgrade, I think it's important to point out, that there are many CPUs in the "new" market of things, that are no better than the one you have currently, and there are many people perfectly happy with said CPUs. (your CPU is probably comparable to a higher clocked Athlon II X2).

I don't mean to pry, but do you have a particular reason for thinking that an upgrade is going to improve your overall experience with the machine significantly?

The machine in my sig, was an upgrade, from a 1GHZ single core G4 all-in-one eMac. The performance difference was quite extreme, and appreciable, and entirely necessary considering that even on-line videos wouldn't play smooth on that old machine. More than likely, I'll have this machine, provided nothing on it fails, for 5-10 years before upgrading.

Sounds good..

here's what I would do:

CPU/MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.738257
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226184
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121391

That's $594 shipped. SLI your current GTX460 with this additional one.

This will obliterate games.

If you're only going to be gaming and will likely upgrade again soon (not that you'll need to), the 2500k is your best bet.

And for a real noticeable performance increase, see if you can fit an SSD in your budget.

For even $600 you have enough for an i5 2500k, mobo, ram, and an SSD.

Edit: Here you go.

i5 2500k - $214.99

2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600 1.35v - $59.99

Gigabyte GA-P67X-UD3-B3 - $129.99

128GB Crucial M4 - $209.99

Total: $614.96 ($594.96 After Rebates)
