Sound stopped working help please

Hi everyone.

I decided to cable manage my friends computer today, and something went wrong. Both of us cant figure out how or why this happened but, the sound stopped working. Pretty much nothing changed, just the cables are rearranged and yes we have made sure that everything is plugged in correctly. We did forget to plug in the pump and the computer overheated but it was not running without the pump for longer that two minutes (if thats relevant at all) Now the sound does not work and when we try to adjust the volume (the little volume tab in the bottom right corner) the sound controls freeze.

Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are his system specs:
AMD Phenom II X4 965
4Gb DDR3 1333mhz
ASUS crosshair III formula (the one with the sound card and no on board audio)
PowerColour HD5870

Just off the top of my head, right click the sound on the bottom right and click playback record and see if your speakers are default.

Sorry if it doesn't help.

When I click the sound icon and try to adjust the volume it just freezes and crashes the sound. When I right click and try to look at the playback and recording devices, it will not open at all. I cannot open the sound settings from the control panel at all either.

I'm pretty sure nothing was damaged as far as visual inspection can tell. The card was not touched at all. Also, the only thing that came close to overheating was the CPU which was dealt with immediately, I'm not sure if that would affect the sound card at all.

By the way, the actual sound card is a SupremeFX X-Fi Audio Card. He's never had a problem with it before.

I'm just not sure how what we did would effect the audio card at all, you know? It's weird.

Hi, I'm the owner of the pc that Archer S posted the problem for.

Just wanted to say we fixed the issue. Turns out it wasn't a hardware problem, the driver for my sound managed to screw itself up I suppose, not that Windows realized it. We reinstalled a new version of the driver and it works again. Freaking Windows.

However, I still can't adjust playback or recording settings? It doesn't freeze, but it will not open. Nor will opening the sound settings in the control panel do anything at all. Still confused, but at this point I'm positive it's a software issue.

EDIT
Just as an update, system restored solved all these problems after a long while of trying to fix the sound drivers myself. Stupid Windows.
