Need help fast. Friend's machine is down...

Thread Starter
My friend says that as he was just playing Dawn of War II retribution when all of a sudden his screen went black and this horrible screeching noise, I assume to be an alert noise, went off. Then he smelled something burning and unplugged in a half second after.

He tried to boot it after blowing out the considerable amount of dust that was in the system, I've since dismantled it and it's laying next to me after being cleaned part by part from the heatsink to each fan to the motherboard itself, and he says it starts to boot normally until it gets to windows and then just crashes, completely shutting down. He can boot into safe mode but that's all.

No overclocking on anything was done. GPU was stock, CPU was stock, RAM was stock.

Here's the specs:

-Intel Xeon X3440
-ASUS P7H55D-M EVO
-8GB (4x2GB) G.Skill DDR3 1333 (blue heatsinks)
-60GB Kingston Vseries SSD for the OS
-400GB internal HDD for data
-1TB External HDD also for data
-CPU was running with the Xigmatek Loki, Temps were fine according to a check the day before, peaking in game at 55*C on the hottest core
-Corsair HX850 was powering the computer
-ASUS DirectCU 1GB GTX 460 again running stock
-There was an additional PCI slot fan to help with any extra heat installed
-Also there was a wireless PCI card installed as well

What can you guys tell me about this? It booted into safe mode so I am stumped here... Everything is registered on this machine so if anything goes wrong the warranty is still active for everything. At least six months left for the oldest component, whichever that may be. Help?

Tried a windows repair? If he can get into safe mode then doesn't sound like something would be wrong with the hardware. Sounds like the system files have gotten corrupted during the stuff. Have him try a repair or a reinstall of windows.

If it was any main component failing, it wouldn't even boot into safe mode. If it was the graphics card, he wouldn't even get a picture. Something may have just overheated and caused the computer to suddenly shut off. The brute shut down may have just corrupted some system files.

Tell him to blow that sucker out atleast once every couple of months, every month is ideal because its harder to get the dust out if its caked on the components.

"he says it starts to boot normally until it gets to windows and then just crashes, completely shutting down."

Is he sure that it isn't just the VGA crashing? I've had users report that to me, and it was actually just the video card out of range w/ their monitor. Probably not the case here, but it could be an issue with his GPU. Can you try your GPU in his rig to see if that helps? GPU's+considerable dust = death, in my experience.

Something could have gotten really hot and somehow burnt out would be my guess.

Check that the fan(s) are spinning on the video card... and the CPU while you're at it.

He says it boots into safe mode just fine. It's only when it begins loading regular windows that it messes up.

I don't think it would even boot into safe mode if his hardware was jacked.
