Yeah I had a psu that the pc would randomly reboot for no apparent reason. Replaced the PSU and rock stable ever since

The GPU has almost no dust on it. If any. Look at the attached pictures and that's what the GPU looked like when I took it out of the machine. Only visible dust is on the back.

PSU then? Hard to believe that the HX850 failed... I'll reassemble it and test it again to see what happens.

I have a copy of Windows 7 here too, thanks to my schooling, and I have a key for it too.

Burning smell doesn't sound good. My last build my motherboard caught on fire from the HAFx front case wiring. 1st try running a system restore if that doesnt work, Take his processor to a local store and see if they can get it to boot with his processor, if it does you know his CPU is gtg, next try the motherboard and so on till you can isolate the problem. I had to do that with my intel SSD brand new but wouldn't boot turned out was a bad hard drive local store didn't give me any issues helping me out. Your situation a bit different so you might have to throw em a few bucks.

I tried to load windows but it didn't fully finish loading the desktop and looped to boot again.

It might be the OS, reinstalling now, but could it be the motherboard?

When I first powered it on, a bright bright red LED came on on the motherboard until the machine posted. Could that be a sign of the motherboard failing instead of the PSU? I mean this IS the HX850. I understand that things might go wrong, but could burning dust have shorted something on the motherboard instead?

HX850's are not perfect and can fail, that being said motherboards with power surges can fail same as PSU's

Computer is still having problems. Like it'll just randomly restart whenever something is being executed like a game or something.

PSU then?

Should I get something that's not retardedly overpowered for this computer like a 650w?

For single gpu systems a 500 watt is more than enough

Could be hard drive failure, Explains the screech maybe could have been the HDD disk.
Also would explain the booting issues. But also sounds alot like PSU failure.
sounds like its one of them.

i had the same issue a year or so ago with random reboots and it was my HDD failing. Run some disc check tools like seatools or something and see what the results are.
