Laptop screen blank on boot?

Well a friend of mine needs some help, her laptop will boot, power's on, the mouse cursor shows up and can be moved around, but there's no boot noise, and the screen is blank. The laptop's not overheating, or excessively loud, etc. It's about 2-3 years old, and yes it's had some viruses in the past (if that helps) what can we do?

I don't have a retail copy of windows. lol, she wants to know what the problem is and how we can fix it. She can't even see a welcome boot screen or anything, it's just blank.
