I have spent a long time doing perfomance/tweaking to get Win 7 the way i like it, so it may take some time researching & testing to get it right.
thx, will mess around with that stuff tomorrow

i am happy with pagefile disabled on all my pcs since old times, since win98, pagefile sucks period.

core avc is a paid codec for hd content, it is very optimized so you can play 720p on a netbook even with the intel gma950 and atom n270, it was the only option ages ago

but now h264 codecs are a lot better, you have divx h264, ffdshow, even the one in windows7 (maybe is core avc old version)

Disabling pagefile in Win 7 is useless, as Windows will still assign a pagefile and expand and contract as it sees fit.

Win 7 does run perfectly fine with 1 GB of RAM and will even allow some gaming. When I run Win 7 in VMWare or VBox for testing I usually assign 1 GB of ram and have never experienced problems and have even played WoW, to test Direct 3D performance. For major multitasking it's not ideal but it's highly exaggerated to say Win 7 won't run well on 1GB.

Personally I don't like Lubuntu or Xubuntu. The best light weight distro's I've found are Mint and Mint KDE. Mint is the standard OS and KDE is the laptop version. The main difference between the two (apart from the start menu and the programmes installed) is that KDE uses 30MB RAM less than standard Mint. I have tried both with not just 1GB of RAM but with 512 and even 256. KDE will run on 256 but very slow and not advised but 512 is perfectly fine.

My own laptop has 2GB of RAM and I run Win 7 on it. I don't do a lot of multitasking on it (I didn't get my PC to mainly use the laptop) but when I run EVE Online I have over 1GB of RAM spare so I don't see only having 1GB as a major handicap. Speed is also not a problem, especially as I try to run the CPU at 800MHZ rather than it's maximum of 2100. The only difference I see in performance is starting programmes, they take longer to load when running the CPU at 800 than 2100, once loaded everything runs pretty smoothly.

The guys at mint must have done so good optimizations to get KDE to use less than the other DEs (or you let the installer make it's own choices on the swap file size/you haven't enabled many effects/features). KDE is not intended for lightweight systems. It's supposed to be the most visually appealing DE. Granted they have made some rather nice improvements recently but I would hesitate to recommend KDE for a netbook unless the person is strictly interested in looks.

Win7 is just like Vista (despite what everyone says it is just better optimized though). So no, 1GB and Windows7 is not a great idea. It's not the end of the world for sure but to be honest it's both the low ram and CPU that's a problem with windows on Atoms. Also, how many people with windows are able to just run one program at a time?

Sorry, I meant LXDE not KDE, KDE is indeed too demanding to run well on 512MB RAM. I was never able to run Lubuntu due to it always starting up in command prompt and not being in the mood to mess with it. But when Mint LXDE boots it uses 140MB RAM, which allows for quite a smooth experience.

Win 7 runs better on an A9 than on Atom, as A9's are far more powerful than those low end, horrible Atoms. I tried to install Win 7 on a netbook a friend owned and it not only took forever but also just didn't run well, he went back to XP. However, a decent CPU and 1GB of RAM are acceptable for Win 7, unless, as I said, you intend to surf, watch a film and have your AV and everything else running, then you need 2GB.

But Win 7 simply runs better on more than 2GB of RAM, due to loading drivers into RAM, rather than needing to access them every time you start a programme. When I start Windows I have 4GB of RAM free but my system runs much smoother than when I had 4GB and that's before I start running three or four EVE clients.

I do however use Auslogis Registry cleaner, it usually finds WAY more than CCleaner......
You're right about Defraggler doing a better job of perfectly aligning everything; in theory, that's great. In reality, any difference in system performance between Defraggler and Auslogics is entirely negligible - my issue with Defraggler is that it takes forever to run, and offers nothing in return, other than keeping your OCD tendencies in check.

I'm pretty sure that an ARMcortex-A9 is not going to beat a N200/N400 especially running win7(unless heavily modified/tailored to the ARM). Perhaps on win8 things will change but by then the N2000 should be out and it will probably still beat the ARM offerings on windows.

@Ryko: I'm wondering if you could do a step by step on the modifications to msconfig you made along with other optimizations. I'm curious if there's anything I missed. Strangely when I disabled the bluetooth part of the startup things in msconfig my setup noticeably became more responsive; so now I want to see what else I can cut out.
