SLI setup which slots?

Thread Starter
Morning,Forgive me if already posted but search returned no results.I have Maximux IV Extreme MB and have 2 MSI GTX 580s.I installed the cards in SLI mode in Slots 1 and 3.I found that top card was running at 60-70 deg idle, probably due to very close proximity to bottom card. When I move the bottom card to slot 4 the temps drops to 40 idle on top and 35 on bottom.
My question is that can I use slot 4 to give more space without loosing too much bandwidth?
According to the manual slot 1 is PCIe_X16/8_1
slot 3 is PCIe_X16_2
slot 4 isPCIe_X8_3
I will be grateful for any advice.
Kind regards.

You lose very little performance by moving to x8, I forgot the exact percentage though, but it is negligible.

I say go for it, you'll be fine.

You will not see any performance degredation difference between x16 and x8 PCIe slots.

Go with the space between the two. Breathing is important to cards in SLI/Crossfire. Keeps top card temps down.

Here's a nice little video showing as proof.

Don't be so concerned about idle temp's, it loaded temp's that will be of issue.
