Core 2 quad q8400 bottlenecking

I am just wondering if my q8400 is bottle necking my GTS 250 or my GTS 250 is having problems. I try to run older games like Cod 4, I have to run almost all the settings of to get playable frames, and Black ops I cannot even play. TF2 is a no go because my cpu is not fast enough. I am ready to trow this computer in the trash and exclusively use my M17X R2.

I can attest to a Q6600 still having playable graphics on a 240gt. I am able to play SC2 and even played COD 4 maxed on this card. What setting settings are you palying at and what resolution??

I am running at 1024x768 max settings no aa

Actually... if you have to turn the graphics down, it's your GPU that's the bottleneck, not the CPU.

Increasing graphix details and resolution puts more stress on the GPU and less on the CPU.

And vice versa.

I have run cod 4 at 60 fps on a 9600gt and this card is much better

Yeah, it seems like your vid card is the problem. Updated vid card drivers? You could also just get a new vid card :-), always great sales in the market place for great prices.

I used to use a Gateway p-7805u to game Core 2 duo 2.26ghz 4gb ram 9800gt. I would get 60 fps in Cod 4 everything maxed at 1440x900 so, I think something is wrong with my gpu

Drivers are updated. If the videocard is the problem I am just going to use my laptop

So now I am confused, I can max out Fear 3 with no aa and get 50-60 but not cod for, can a card just hate some games
post #10 of 11
In a way it can yes. Some games are just more detailed / complex increasing the load on the GPU or CPU (or both), which would make them run at lower fps.
