Budget graphics card for high resolution gaming

Thread Starter
I'm putting together a rig for a friend and he plans to use the very large LCD t.v in his room as a monitor. My only concern is that on a budget of less than 1k (for the entire rig) he wont be able to afford a graphics card that can run games at a high enough resolution.

Will a 6790 be enough or should I look into some higher end cards?

depending on what games he wants to play, at what resolution, assuming 1080, the 6790 should be alright to play most games.

Very large lcd or not, it's only going to be 1080p

You should get him a way better gpu for $1k budget. In fact if he plans on using it mostly for gamin, that should be the most expensive component in the build.

He gave me crysis 2 as a benchmark. He doesn't play it, but he wants a computer capable of playing it on high settings (probably at 1080, thats standard for most LCD t.v's these days right?) at a reasonable frame rate.

I was putting up a proposal build for a friend and with only a budget of $1K I was able to put a 6870 Radeon on the list. Higher resolution requires more vRAM, and you'll have to spend considerably more to get more vRAM.

The only thing really breaking the budget right now is the hard drive since the prices have risen, I had to take some out of the gpu budget for a decent size hard drive.

Huh, I just noticed that. What the hell happened?

Anyway I just looked on NCIX, and yo can get a XFX HD6870 for $160 after mail-in rebate: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=62756&...X&promoid=1316

Not bad considering that they start at $180AU in my country.

EDIT: Just saw what happened in Thailand. Blimey, what a mess. They say prices won't return to normal till Q2 2012.

And look at this:

That's a huge mess, right there.

How big does he want? TB hard drives can still be had under $75...

Amd phenom quadcore, mobo, cooler $300
Hdd $75
Case $75
Windows? $100
Ram $50
Dvd drive $20
Psu $80

Total = $700

There is plenty of room for a higher end gpu
