[Project] Native - Mac Pro "Original" Build - EXTERNAL RAD BOX - Page 6

I picked up a Mac pro (faulty) case for £75 + £20 shipping. I then realised it was an easy fix and sold it on for £200, £105 profit for the opportunity to play with an excellent case and get a good look at the insides.

I miss it, but I really don't have the equipment to mod it for PC.

I was the same, a few days ago I was totalling up how much the case + materials is going to come to and was like eek.gif However when comparing the total build cost to an equivalent mac pro it is so totally worth it biggrin.gif

Keep an eye out on Gumtree there's often a few faulty macs on there which can be picked up cheap, I picked up a new one on eBay as it was still cheaper than the Lian Li case I had been looking at

Its definitely worth it biggrin.gif I started off just planning a simple conversion though the more time i've spent looking at the case working out how to do it the more in depth its became

Impressive deal that thumb.gif

My knowledge of metalwork is pretty small atm though my dad said he would help out which is great as I really want this to be a quality build

I've had a look on Gumtree a few times, the spare and repairs Mac Pro/Power Mac G5 cost £150-£200 if I'm lucky enough to find one.

Thanks, it was an odd find really, i was the only bidder... thought somehow i'd missed something as others were going for a lot more. My dads pretty useful like that but i don't live with him anymore so its a bit harder to do projects together.

When can we expect an update then?

I work as a seasonal paddle sports coach in the summer while at uni so am staying at my parents house during the week which is useful as I can also use my dads workshop thumb.gif

Over the weekend to get an idea how the case is going to go together I'm going to use some card and layout the inside. I'll then use this card for templates when cutting the metal, should help get the right cut first time biggrin.gif

So at least a mini update soon thumb.gif

Things are going to now start progressing at last biggrin.gif

The following are the parts I'm about to order in the next couple of days:

2 x OCZ 256GB Vertex 4 SSD
Intel Core i7 3770K
Asus P8Z77-M PRO
2 x EVGA 670 FTW
Corsair 850W AX850 Modular

Any suggestions for decent overclockable ram? I've heard good reviews on the Samsung ram though I would prefer something with a heat spreader for aesthetics. If anyone has any suggestions on different hardware I'm open to suggestions

Although I wanted to keep the exterior completely stock I decided with all the effort I'm putting into the interior I needed a way of showing it off tongue.gif

I started off by marking out a side window, due to the position of the apple logo I changed this from a rectangle to a set of overlapped rectangles with rounded edges

38.jpg

The first cuts were made on the straight edges

39.jpg

The corners were cut at angles to remove the bulk of the window

41.jpg

Grinding out the corners

43.jpg

The first round of filing to smooth the edges

45.jpg

Tomorrow I'm going to finish filing the window and start bending the metal for the inside

Thanks for keeping with me, i've now got weekends free again so things can start moving again

Made a small amount of progress today filing and sanding the window cut out, it needs a little more work doing to it to smooth out the corners though I'm happy with it so far. The cut out showing the two middle drive bays was made as the apple logo extended up further than the main rectangle and I decided it looked better showing two whole bays rather than 2 and a bit, these will hold the 2 SSD drives. On these two bays I'm trying to source two little SSD badges made out of metal to attach to the bays biggrin.gif
