Despite what some would have you believe, the modern smartphone market is very young and (as Android has proved) there is still a lot of room for success. MS was very successful and well known in the smartphone market before WP7 (remember all the complaints that WM 6.5 was/is more advanced that WP7?). The problem is that the market has gotten almost a year older since the first phones launched and there hasn't been a lot of success (thus why they contracted with Elop of Nokia to kill off Meego and push WP7).

I think it comes down too, Google supplys Android free to the manufacturers so they can't be touched technically.

The company that gave us the best portable music player, search engine, mobile OS, webmail, SQL server, PC OS (debatable but I'll let this one pass) has spoken.

I'm sure MS or Apple has used or at least visited www.google.com once. Besides, they know Google has the answer to everything.

Microsoft/Apple are companies...they aren't physical beings.

I think Zune actually was the best music player, and wp7 is the best mobile OS I've seen. But hotmail can't touch Gmail, same with yahoo mail, they're utter crap in comparison. Google is obviously the best search engine, but kind of in the same way that Intel has the best CPUs: no one is debating the point of who is best but the competition is just as good in most real world usage patterns. Case in point: i used bing a few days ago to book a flight to Prague because i found that bing was much more helpful than google in linking to orbits etc.

The point is: MS has had their hand in the Mobile OS department LONG before Google. Plus, iOS and Android have been around for some time in the modern smartphone market, so MS should have been able to make WP7 comparable.

Imagine the irony, working at MS, using a Mac, running Firefox, with Google as main search engine.

That was OFF topic anyway

WM is a decent OS for the mobile market, i had WM 6/6.5 back on my old htc fuze, but WM doesnt stand well beside iOS or android....could be the stigmata attached to WM, maybe the UI of WM isnt what people want, or it could be the utter lack of an app market....either way, MS needs to face the fact that they have a lot to accomplish to be considered a threat in the mobile market again.

side note, i agree with flamingoyster, the zune marketplace was/is the best player/market up to this point.

wp7 might not be comparable in sales, but it is more than comparable in quality of the OS
