[TechReport]A quick look at Bulldozer thread scheduling - Page 2

However, AMD claims Bulldozer's sharing arrangement has a relatively small performance penalty.
You know you suck when a review site finds out how to get more performance than you, the maker of the cpu...
I used to lean towards AMD, but this just shows their stupidity, both in ignoring the potential performance gain (because they definitely must have noticed it), and then not acting on it by working on a scheduler patch either with or without MS.

No offence, but do you have proof that it did nothing? I've heard from other users how it really did help on XP pre SP3 (or was it SP2? not sure), but it could be placebo ofc. Personally I always just installed the DCO without any afterthought.

LOL sorry but amd allready told us that sharing the ressource would force a penalty and operating without sharing wouldnt imply that penalty .. so this article didnt find anything knew

The cache would fix that, but this at least proves beyond any reasonable doubt what I've been saying for a bit now. Bulldozers problems stem from the shared resources not being fast enough.

It could be overcome but the shared L1 cache and scheduler are too small/slow, if the shared L1 cache was 32KB and the scheduler did at least 4ops/cycle, if not 8ops/cycle, it'd beat Phenom II quite handily.

My XP SP3 would BSOD like crazy until I installed the patch.

No more BSODs, further OC headroom and also a bit better load balancing between threads.

All this module/core stuff... We already know that BD itself is better than Phenom, but the resource sharing idea doesn't work simply because of the low quality of the silicon application of the architecture. If the caches were as fast as Sandybridge's, I bet the resource sharing concept would work at full throttle (instead of actually crippling the FMACs and the ALUs) and would simply destroy Phenom II.

With the right tweaks, plus getting the manufacturing under control, bulldozer has the potential that everybody thought it did. Its too bad that these yield issues screwed up their plans so bad. At least bulldozer can oc pretty well, k10.5 with a horrible cache possibly would've made the situation worse.

I did tests years ago but it was post-SP3. So if the effect was to be had pre-SP3, then I wouldn't have seen it.

What AMD needs to do (SHOULD HAVE DONE AT LAUNCH) is release software that intelligently augments Windows Task scheduler. These issues couldnt be a surprise to them. These manual tweaks are great if your running a server and your workload is constant, but we need something that can adjust in realtime.

Eh?

Most manufacturers don't provide their product already tweaked for any high performance use and most of the time it's up to end users and small companies to squeeze out all the performance they can, not the manufacturer. This applies to almost every sector of retail goods...
