Upgrading from XP to Win 7.

Thread Starter
Hello.

I want to upgrade my XP to Win 7 , preferably - Ultimate.

But , there are few things that worry me and I want to know. And I hope that I will get detailed answers , please

1. What is the difference between Ultimate and Enterprise ?

2. I read , that Ultimate will get updates until 2015 but enterprise until 2020. So , enterprise would be better for me - home user [ gamer I guess ] ?

3. Besides updates , should I wait for Win 8 , or just go with Win 7 Ultimate or Enterprise ? I saw some vids of Win 8 , and I really don't like that new interface , there was no '' start '' button either and.

4. Most important question for me. I have 800 GB of files I want to keep. Games , movies [ films ] , music collections , pictures , useful software. And , my external HDD is already full with other stuff I can't delete that is important. If I upgrade to win 7 , will I be able to access all of those files ?

I haven't reinstalled any OS in my life , no upgrades , so I don't know how it works. But , I know that my friend will get me Win 7 Ultimate or Enterprise and might help me even to install it.

I guess Win XP is going to be deleted and then Win 7 installed ?

Anyway , if so , then , what about those files. Will I be able to access them and ummm play those games , watch those films , listen to that music ?

I am not trolling , I really don't know answers to these questions , and I hope I will get help

Forget about Ultimate, and especially forget about Enterprise.
THere is an edition for home gamer and it's caller Home Premium. Never go with higher than you need.

Windows 8 has 2 interfaces - one is the new one, one is the old one, you can use whichever you like.

Yes, you will keep your files. New install of Windows 7 puts everything in folder Windows.old, so nothing will be deleter (unless you format - then everything will be deleted).

Speaking from personal experience, I upgraded Windows XP 64-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit using sofware called Laplink PC Mover, basically it allows you to keep all of your files and programs in tact whilst upgrading, it worked flawlessly for me although it does come at a price.

http://www.laplink.com/pcmover

Personally, I would go with Ultimate everytime, but then again it's each to their own.

Ultimate has a lot of things that the average gamer does not and won't ever need. And costs twice more than Home Premium, which has all the important goodies.

Fair point, suppose if you're not planning on connecting to a domain there's no point in going for ultimate

Uhm , well everything is + - clear for me.

5. If I can get Pro or Ultimate 64 bit , then it would be better than Home Premium even if I won't use all of those functions ?

6.About those files , all files will be saved , and I will be able to access all of them ? I mean , all 800 GB of files in 1 folder ?

7. And about Windows 8 , should I wait ~ half a year and get it , or just go with Win 7 in next few days or so ? Well , it is kinda a stupid question , as nobody exactly knows what will be there and how everything will look , work etc. But at-least from stuff we know abut Win 8 , might it be better than 7 ? As Microsoft makes a good OS , then a bad one , then a good one , then a bad one

5. Define better. Your games won't play better. Your Windows won't start faster. Your desktop won't look cooler. Your wallet will be significantly lighter.
Pro is just what it says - for professionals. Ultimate is for ultimately rich people, who won't feel the difference. If you're one of em - fine. Here is the difference: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/w...oducts/compare

6. The current state of your C drive will go in Windows.old. Meaning in C:\\Windows you will have Win7, and in C:\\Windows.old\\ you'll have Documents and Settings, Program Files and Windows XP (unusable). Any other partitions won't be affected at all.

7. I genuinely can't imagine mylesf using XP one year more. It's horrid from today's (my) point of view Windows 8 won't be significantly different than 7 for desktops.

The major difference is that it will be 100% compatible across desktops, tablets and smartphones, and will support USB3. Everything else is pretty much tweaked Windows 7.

EDIT: To underline:
Features of Ultimate vs Home Premium:
- Windows XP mode - for running old company software in windows XP virtual machine - can be installed on HomePremium too.
- Domain Join - totally useless for home PC.
- Full System Backup and Restore - does what it says, along with 1000 other backup programs, you can use any of them in Home Premium.
- Has BitLocker, encription - useless unless you have secret military plans for invading Iran on your HDD.
- Can switch languages - useless unless you're buying Windows from Croatia or Kenya.

^ Advantage of Ultimate for eveyday home power user = 0.

A few things come to mind...

It is important to ensure there are Win7 drivers for your hardware before you upgrade from XP.

Also, if you plan on upgrading to more than 4GB RAM you should use the 64-bit version.

He should use 64bit anyway, has an i5, 32bit is a thing of the past Money for nothing, really. 20% of your CPU stays idle and for the life of you, you can't upgrade to 4-6-8GB RAM

Today 64bit Windows causes no trouble at all, the days of bugged driver-lacking XP 64 are long gone
