An $8,000 build is one thing, but an $8,000 SB-based build is another. You're well into SR-2/dual socket territory at the 8k mark.

Well, OK, I can't comment on whether Nthusim is a good choice for that or not. as you're getting pretty specialized. However, their community gives you a good place to start asking questions about projectors. Not only should they be able to advise you on device selection, but they should be able to help with things like alignment and image overlap. I would imagine that this will be one of the places where the "devil" lives, but you won't know that until the thing is installed.

I'd still try and get your gpu specs matched up with the job that the gear is going to have to do. If you can do what you need with fewer GPUs, then I would. That also may free up some money for other parts of the build; massive overkill in places you don't need it may be sucking money away from other places were a few extra bucks might enable you to provide a better experience for the user and hence for you customer.

This is just sort of a sketch, but seriously get a xeon sr-2 build no matter what with all that money. My project in my sig will be somewhat similar.

3D is for immersion. It's not for gaming, it's a simulation for your "typical end-users" where 3D = better.
Don't buy the Digital cable. just run the standard analog outputs from the card so you can take advantage of the internal DAC from the card ( the reason why you buy a soundcard )

Right. I'll look into more 3D Vision projectors.

I'd go for a cheaper GTX 580. The Lighting Extreme is only really worth it if you're pushing clocks hard or with LN2. Can't say I wasn't tempted by the sexy looks though Go for the standard GTX 580 Lightning instead.

I'm sure you have this covered, but I've always found cases to be a love it or hate it thing so make sure the end user likes the appearance of the HAF X (I don't )

If the rig is going to be used in a home cinema-esque environment I would suggest extra storage as it'd be easier to just have media on HDD rather than discs etc.

Without price being the concern, I'd go for the smallest Revodrive X2 (100gb i think?) for pure speed loading the program and such. RAID complicates things, if you can get the speed you desire without it you will be better off.

I also second the notion to look long and hard at the projectors you choose, because that will be the #1 thing to make or break this project. Get measurements of throw distance and screen size, as well as how lit the room will be (for the immersion I'm assuming it will be well controlled, but you should check anyway).

Don't use a RAT7 if you want it to be comfortable for a lot of people, because it just isn't. I had one, messed with all the adjustments, and then took it back and got a G700 (and three other people couldn't get the RAT7 to work for them either.)
