How to copy IDE hard drive?

Okay, so I admit this is a major newbie question, but for some reason I cannot get it done.

I found an old IDE hard drive I had from college, 40 gig IDE, works fine. I wanted to copy THE WHOLE HARD DRIVE onto my sata 500gig drive in my gaming machine.

SO I installed an IDE cable, booted up my computer, computer recognize the IDE drive just fine. Navigated to it in my computer, right clicked it and hit "COPY", and pasted to the desktop of my Sata drive. It began to copy files, but when I look in the folder it created, tons of stuff is missing and not there but appears on the original IDE Drive.

It was also throwing warning messages about "this requires admin rights to copy" CONTINUE OR SKIP, and I clicked "Continue" but its not copying the hard drive as it is, tons of stuff is missing.

its 35gigs full, after it "finished copying", I checked the contents of the folder it created on my desktop and it was only 4 gigs big, its like its skipping tons of stuff

Can't you copy single folders at a time rather than the whole drive at once?

Thats one idea, but that gets old QUICK with 35gigs of data across an entire hard drive, and this drive is 8 years old I cannot even remember all the places I kept files during that time frame

Copy the main folders then invidiually.

Example: Program Files, My Pictures, My Music, My Documents, etc?

yeah thats what I meant... sometimes i noticed just copying a whole drive doesn't work, but when you copy folders instead it works fine.
