Overclock 8GB Mushkin Silverline?

Hi guys!

I have just bought a new motherboard, the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX. And i had some new RAM laying around that i was meant to sell but never got round to it. Anyway the RAM i have is 8GB Mushkin Silverline 1333MHz, will i be able to overclock my RAM to 1600MHz or more? I may buy another set of 8Gb to get me up to 16GB RAM. Will 16GB still be overclockable?

Thanks

Will 8GB of overclocked Mushkin Silverline be better than 16GB of 1333MHz Mushkin Silverline? If 16GB is better than 8GB of overclocked RAM then i will just wait a bit and buy another 8GB kit? Obviously only if this RAM can be overclocked.

when you fill up the memory slots its puts more strain on the controller...But i beleive any memory can be overclocked, wink.gif Mushkin line is very nice in overclocking but the thing about AMD platforms is that they still enjoy the low latency,
Meaning tighter Timings will give you the best performance..
which kit is it exactly that you have

I've used 2x4GB Mushkin Silverline 1333MHz CL9. They are Mushkin's low end RAM and do not overclock very well. You might be able to hit 1600MHz at CL10/11.

Due to the low binning of generic 1333Mhz CL9 kits - especially 4GB DIMMs - this is highly, highly unlikely.  You might top about 1425Mhz but 1600Mhz is a huge stretch - and few if any generic kits could be expected to do that.  If you're going to be taking the RAM to 1600Mhz with such raised latencies, it's not worth it - there is absolutely no performance gain, whether tangible or intangible, because the resulting measurable bandwidth should be approx. the same.

There is none unless you run lots of apps concurrently or very large apps like CAD, video editing software, etc.
