[Official Guide] Modifying/Removing NVidia GPU Heat Spreader/IHS - Page 12

So the only thing that prevents the Transistors from shorting out, when you run without the ISH, is the chip is slightly "raised"??

from what i understand, Yes. the ISH isolates the transitors, where nothing ( should ) touch to make a jump.

Yea! Got this puppy stickied! Thanks! It's such a great mod! Efficiency is the key and being able to have a modded heatspreader makes the card and case so much cooler.

I probably won't do any more mods to my GPU till I get a new Kepler or 580. I'll attempt the mod again and possibly run the stock cooler or go to water.

I really hope that Nvidia will one day run their chips without heatspreaders. AMD does it and they are fine. I think Nvidia does it for a safety issue from preventing manufacturer's from killing their chips before they even get to the end users. It would really help cut down temperatures in Nvidia cards and probably allow them to run higher clocks...man I hope Nvidia reads this...

Ah, to be stickied, in the world of forums its like saying youve made it tongue.gif Congrats on your sticky, enjoyed doing the mod and love the addional reduction in temps. Its a great thread, well written and complimented well with wonderfull pics. Youve done a wonderful thing Cakewalk, the community is better for it thumb.gif

Gonna risk it and do this with my 560Ti Hawk. I hate the temps it's giving me.

Yea!!!!!

If there's anything unclear in the guide just let me know. It should be clear enough that even a noob can do it.

I suggest holding the razerblade with 1 hand, with the razerblade pointing down, then use the end of a screw driver like i said to tap on the razerblade to crack it. Thats the #1 most critical part where you either win or lose...

I went to water cooling, and now I'm 1-2C off ambient for idle and 45C max...lol I bet these chips really could get some insane voltages and MHz if we could keep the VRM cool enough.

We need our folder friends like FTW420 to crack open the heatspreader of his chip...bet he could get a new record max clock...

two things that should be changed/mentioned. one should be that when removing the IHS you should get under both sides and break the seals on each side for a MUCH easier removal process requiring a tenth of the force instead of just one side. the second is i would recommend one of those blades painters use. you can get them @ homedepo, they look like putty knives and are used for scraping stuff off. managed to get into the corners at first then slowly work my way around the sides for a nice safe removal. only down side is i reassembled it with barely any changes. i do recall the card that was running insanely hot compared to the other dropped a few C overall since i recall it hit 86-99 which stablizes @ 88c in furmark for top card in SLI with good air flow while the other card peaks at about 80c. was hoping to get them into the mid 70s but somehow i dont think that will be happening given the design of the coolers, tho i could sand off more of the IHS i think or modify the heatsink to fit directly on the chip.

I did this three times already. I used the scrapper razors at home depot and just tapped the corners a few times and it popped off pretty easily.
