[Official Guide] Modifying/Removing NVidia GPU Heat Spreader/IHS - Page 20

Man that must really suck. Tell us how it goes.

Small update -

Threw the card back into the system and quick plugged in the power supply even though the card and the processor have no cooling on them. Plugged in the HDMI and it showed me the ASUS mobo logo with the option to enter the bios and then the mobo's cpu fan error screen so the system posts and the card seems to be outputting a video signal at the very least.

If I can get some time after painting the bedroom tonight I'll try to get the processor loop up and running and see if I can get it to load windows for me on this card. But hey no sparks or fire and the "VGA" led didn't stay lit red so there may be a chance I saved it with my sub-pard soldering capabilities.

Well card is officially dead. Would have loved to have seen some more images of the de-lidding process in action and fewer pics of sanded IHS in this how to. The most dangerous aspect of it all didnt get more than a sentence description it seems. Not blaming the original poster for my failure but it would be nice to see more info there.

Sorry for your loss, that sucks. I had a similar event happen to one of my 480's when trying to drill out a stripped screw. Took a chunk out of a chip similar to what happen to yours. However the card seemed to work just fine. Dodged a bullet but felt pretty sick when it happen.

As far as the process, there is not much more information required that is already mentioned in Step 3 that would have helped ie:

DONTTTTTT TAP HARD or hit the razor in far in between the two. You are just breaking the seal, you go 1-2mm too far and you hit the resistors, you break one of those, you ruin your chip.

Its a risky process, sorry it had happen to you.

Off to ebay to sell some stuff and try to smag a used twin frozr 560ti. Maybe an early build without the heat issues this newer revision had

I hear you. Its a bit of a white knuckle process. I did it three times and three 480's and still made me nervous.

Yea, given the known issue with these cards and their age. I'm thinking now about just leaving the functioning card as is as it's temps were never really a problem and saving up for a 600 series card to just avoid the whole issue all together going forward. Besides the 1gb SLI setup was sort of a let down performance wise for me anyway.
Card is in and running on the wife's rig right now processing 3Dmark11 benchmarks. Temp has yet to clear 55c on the performance benchmark with a Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II in direct contact using Arctic Silver Ceramique 2.

Local computer repair shop was successfully able to re-solder it where my attempts had failed.

This thing shall forever be known as Zombie card to me.

So ya got it workin again? I'd highly highly recommend MX2. I went from that ceramique crap to the MX2 and dropped 4C in temps! It was wonderful!

Good seein the card workin!
The ceramique was throw away basically just to see if it worked as i had some lying around. My god that **** is sticky. For the final attachment i went with Arctic Silver 5 which is my preferred TIM for my rig at this point in time. Didn't de-lid the other card in fear of the issues and because it's never had a heat problem. This card runs nice and cool now no worries at all. Running cooler than the other even with a hotter overclock where as before it was 30c hotter even under water. Going to turn the wick up and see how she handles it in 3DMark11.
