Most all PCB ( Including Die substrate ) is straight Epoxy.

what is the danger (con or advantage ) of not using the ISH at all, just laying whatever cooling system you are using directly on the chip?

Would it be bad for the transitors to be be touching the cooling plate of your cooling system? (i'm water cooled, and want to minimize the amount of material that heat has to transfer though.

You cannot connect transistors to a metal surface, that would mean all the transistors would be linked together. The chip is higher than the transistors so you should not have that problem. If you do, maybe add some non-thermally conductive pads or tape or something to protect the transistors around the chip before you lay down the heatsink to the chip. As far as I know, you should be fine touching the heatsink directly to the chip without the IHS.

AMD already does this, although I do believe they have some type of protectant over the actual chip, but to my knowledge, all ATI chips come without a heat spreader.

This is hugely impressive. I learned a lot what is inside that card. I wouldn't take it apart but maybe one day i would if i get bored but i don't wanna blow 300 dollars off the water lol. However i would LOVE to know if you overclocked the card after doing the mod or you used stock settings? REP! thumb.gif

AMAZING!

Also it would HAD been nice if you did a youtube video. Would be interesting!

I did the very same on my 480 SLI setup. Took both off and attached the lapped Antec 620's straight too it. Was able to get an easy 900 oc and run it at 850 oc when gaming in BF3. The results are amazing.

See sig for details on my mod.

The only issue i would see would be if the contact point from IHS to chip Heatsink was machined to a fixed hight. My 560ti for instance, its IHS is surrounded by a heatsink plate over the PCB. The actual chip heatsink mounted to this and could not be lowered any farther. If the IHS was removed i would have a gap the size of that missing IHS. Some addional modding could correct this but i would lose the cooling the heatsink plate provided for my vram, vrm

i'm running a corsair H100 to mine, Crysis is a steady 70° at average 55 fps, so i'm curious to see what improvements I could see.

I'll just add this to my list of mods i'm working on. but i need to move some stuff around in my system

Well you know my motto, if it doesn't fit make it fit!

@maxbrando2000

I totally plan on reattaching mine if i were in need of rma.

Rage, nice job on that mod, that will get er done lol

@clayton

Your temps seem abit high for a H100 on a 560ti. Those are about 10-15c off what stock would give you imo. I think i posted my temps in my build log and i really needed to crank the voltage to get temps close to those using this mod. You should be more in the 50c range i would think if running stock-ish
