right now i have two 2 gig sticks of ram in dual channel config, is it worth fifteen bucks to get a third for 6 gigs and triple channel? will i see any performance improvement? (specifically for video rendering, 3d animation, and BF3)

Thanks in advance

Dual Channel vs Triple Channel has no real-world differences, but you will see a difference between the 2GBs added.

a significant difference? like 10%?

From what I understand, BF3 is quite the memory hog. Origin and BF3 have a nasty little memory leak that may or may not have been resolved.... If you do lots of video, I would indeed recommend the third stick. Can't really hurt for 15 bucks!

Let me also say that if you're running out of RAM, Windows will usually let you know.

i do a lot of motion graphics and 3d work and have been getting more into editing and compositing - i will confess though that my main motivation for asking is BF3, any improvement to my professional tools is just gravy (i know its backwards but whatever)
