What folding-software should I use?

post #1 of 28
Thread Starter
Hi guys,

Since the_beast reminded me of folding in another thread, I've decided to start folding 24/7 by using my homeserver. However, I am unsure what programs I should use for the folding, here's the hardware if you should need that:
AMD Phenom II x4 955 @ 3.4GHz
Asus GeForce 260 GTX
Corsair Dominator DHX+ 1600MHz for AMD
Gigabyte something motherboard

It's running Windows Home Server at the moment, however I might swap that to Debian or Ubuntu.

The cpu and the GPU is just idling, so I might aswell use it to aid medical research, plus, I can keep my room warm with it!

Thanks for the links. Should I also consider moving to Linux, as I read somewhere that it's a lot faster in folding?

You would see an improvement if you were running BIGADV, however for regular SMP I believe there isn't very much difference.

Would the Phenom x4 955 be able to run bigadv's?
post #6 of 28
Not unless it was WC'd and at 4.4GHz+.

Ok. So my best options for now is to run it on the GPU and on the CPU with the -smp option enabled? What Windows OS is the best to fold on then? My WHS 2011 + Nvidia drivers doesnt seem to work, it doesn't fold at all on the GPU, but on the cpu its fine.

I'm using the newest drivers from NVIDIA, however the card just reports as "Failed" in the f@h client. Here's the log if you can help me with it;
