N64 on a TV nowadays?

Hey guys,

This is just theoretical, but say if I'm looking to buy an N64, what screen could I use it on? My cousin has one and I've played it on a HDTV, and it looked pretty bad.

If I want to use it on a modern LCD/Plasma/LED, is there any way I can make it look at least half respectable?

Or am I better off going for an old CRT monitor or TV? We used to have 2 CRT TVs but unfortunately my dad chucked them out

Cheers.

You can play a N64 on anything with the right hookups, but I don't think it will ever display over 480p, so it will never be in HD...

Heck they even make component (the red, white, and yellow) to DVI if you want to play it on your monitor.

Get an n64 emulator and set it to render at like 25 times the native resolution with AA

I want a real N64 though
See as a kid I played this amazing console but never owned one myself, my mum almost bought me one but then changed her mind at the last minute because she I guess she didn't like the idea of me and my brother continuously playing video games all day. Well look at me now mum

And yes, I am Australian and spell it 'mum' haha for all you Yanks out there.

You can

and then use the emulator set to render the game at like 4kx4k resolution with max AA. So it's like playing the real thing only you get amazing resolutions and you can use the savestates to save anytime you want, plus some other nice features (like gameshark, changing the gamespeed, etc)

It is pretty nasty on modern TVs. I only have a 32" samsung and it is pretty fuzzy. If you want the experience I would get a cheap tube TV

Dont get me wrong, it is still playable, just wont live up to memories. Or you could do this....

Just get an emulator. It works flawlessley. I play on my htpc sometimes, it actually looks pretty good.

I third the idea of using an emulator. Zelda Ocarina of Time with a high res texture pack + antialiasing is incredible.

I played Starfox 64 about a year ago on an HDTV.. the pixels look much worse when blown up 10x in size due to the dimensions of the TV. Nothing you can really do to improve on that unless you can somehow scale down the video input, but then you'd have black bars on all sides of the screen.

If you have a TV that supports panoramic, just that. Then it only stretches the sides and the middle stays the original resolution. I was using my N64 last month. Played Super Mario 64 while waiting for BF3. Or just have it in the 480P boxed resolution.
