Sound Card and 2.1 Speakers for ~AU$100

Being in the process of cleaning up the loose ends on my rig has led me to the conclusion that the 2.0 speakers I saved from ending up in my highschool's bins are no longer gonna cut it. I want to know what the best combination of speakers/sound card I can get for about AU$100. I want at least 2.1, but wouldn't mind 5.1 if it will likely sound alright on my M4A87TD-USB3's integrated sound card. The stores I can buy from are MSY and PLE

For that kind of budget your best bet is trying to find second hand mate. Failing that, you could have a nice budget setup consisting of:

second hand around here pretty much limits me to speakers like I already have, and an old sound card like the ones I'm swimming on from old Pentium II systems. It really is sad when you see MSY's prices beating used parts

Just curious what 2.0 speakers were u on - also what main usage would this proposed new set up be for i.e music, games, movies, etc? I have a relative in Sydney and for music and considering what he paid for 'em the Microlab Solo 6C @ $109 AUD was an awesome buy hehe One could also fish out a proper 8-10" hifi sub to pair with something like that ^^ With limited budget dun worry about sound card/dac so much - hit as good a pair of speakers you could afford 1st

The speakers are unbranded, with nothing but a label saying "Multimedia Speaker System" underneath one of the . I'm planning on using them for games and music, possibly some basic audio editing. Why would I get a really good set of speakers, just to use them with the integrated sound card? won't it lower the overall quality?

Nope the dac/soundcard should not influence buying decisions for speakers/cans and many peeps have an "unofficial" 1:5 ratio dac/soundcard to cans/speakers budget for example. With good speakers/cans a good dac/soundcard would bring it to another level. Crap speakers/cans with the most godliest dac/soundcard still sound like crap
