PSU blew? Need new PSU.

I have built a second computer I am going to give a friend as I just recently upgraded to sandy bridge. Anyway I was building the PC with all my old bits from my first PC. Plugged everything in correctly, turned it on and the light at the back of the PSU lit up, but made a few noises. Pressed the power button, didn't work. Unplugged everything, tried again, same thing happened. The back lit switch lit up by there was obvious sparking and noises on the PSU (which btw is quite old and crappy). Tried again for a third time and the light just died at the back when I tried to switch it on.

I know this may sound dumb, but pretty sure its the PSU right? I had the motherboard and CPU running in my gaming rig only a few days ago so I can exclude those out as being dud. Plus I switched from the old OCZ 500W because of sparking issues (which I forgot about derp) to my Corsair HX 750W.

So from what I have said, pretty sure the PSU died right? Nothing turned on so I don't think any of my hardware in that PC is jeopardised mm?

Just looking for an el' cheapo PSU that can run an; 4850, Intel e8400, gigabyte ud3p 775 mobo, some fans, 6gb ddr2 ram and a old ide dvd drive and a 250gb hdd. Should only need around 500W right? So something like a Gigabyte Superb Power Supply 550W or a Thermaltake Litepower 500W ATX PSU would work right?

Thanks!

You should check the hardware first with a working PSU to make sure nothing got ****ed when the PSU went.

As far as power requirements go, a 350W will do.. go for the Antec EarthWatts Green 380/430 or the Corsair CX430, whatever you find cheaper.. at similar prices go for the EarthWatts as they're better than the CX.

Cheers, will do so.

Also I really need an el cheapo PSU since I am on a tight budget as I am essentially giving this PC away to a friend for freebies. I dont think he will want to pay over $50 AU and both those PSU are above that mark.

Link the shop/s he/you'll be buying from so we can have a look at what's on offer and make suggestions accordingly.

That is the PSU section.

I don't want to unplug my whole PSU from my current gaming rig to test out the motherboard and other components. Is there a single thing I can unplug in order to test the motherboard and other components?

You can leave the HDDs and ODDs and fans plugged but you need to unplug the rest.

Looking at that shop, your cheapest options are the Hipro 350/430/480, they don't look like much because they're not retail units but Hipro is a good OEM and those are good PSUs, if you want to go for something else though, the Antec EarthWatts 430 or the Antec NeoEco 450 are also pretty cheap and very solid units.

The gigabyte 460w would work i think, probably get a little loud during gaming though. i had a similar settup a few years ago with an earthwatts 380w, its fan sped up during gaming. not too loud though, quieter than the 4830 it was powering.

Its selection is crap too, but i realize that's kinda the norm where you are.

Edit: That neo eco is a bit different from the ones sold here, Apparently it is modular which is pretty cool. 34amp +12 rail means it should handle that rig. 80+ means it should do it quietly too.

Thermaltake litepower 500w seems decent. I'd imagine the quality wouldn't be as good as the antec, but still probably better than that OCZ you had. It's even 80+ certified.
