Will my CPU bottleneck the HD 6950 2GB and how much? - Page 2

To answer the question though.. yes it will.

Prior to my 2500k I had a Phenom II x4 @ 3.7 and I saw a decent bump in FPS when going to the 2500k.

Does your 6950 reach around 99% usage in most of the intensive games you play? It's hard to imagine how a 4.5Ghz 2500k bottlenecks a 6950.

At 3.4 you will definitely bottleneck that 6950. Although, you should be able to comfortably play almost any game maxed. Given that your CPU can handle the game itself.

However, since the x4's have gotten so cheap, it might not be a bad idea to pick up a 955 and a better cooler. Hell even get a x3 720 for ~$70 on newegg.

EDIT:

And tbh, for gaming and even casual rendering (like me), a 2500k/2600k OCed will be extremely good and a huge upgrade from your X2.

He doesn't need to change his platform. He just needs a better CPU and overclock. A 955 oc'd to 3.8 will definitely be more than enough for him to acheive very playable frame rates. Sure it's no SB, but unless he's going to be doing some encoding or rendering, it's pretty much pointless.
And if you bust out the argument that he'll get more FPS, well if he's running a 60Hz monitor, what does it matter? He'll only get 60FPS regardless.

No it's not. SB-E is the direct replacement for 1366, with the new socket 2011. IB will be the replacement for SB, and will be socket 1155.

It should be priced similarly to SB if Intel keeps with their pricing scheme they have had for the last 2 years.

I can't get a Quad Phenom II because of my motherboard. I will get a new CPU and mobo next year.

Given your running 1080p with most games running at high details or better it's unlikely your CPU will be a bottleneck. Most games are GPU dependant anyway, so in a nutshell your good to go and don't worry about such things.

This is the answer you are looking for.

I don't understand that. You should be able to get a quad phenom II with your board. It's AM3, chipset supports it, MSI even lists several as supported CPU's.

I'm not saying you need to, or even should, but you definitely should be able to if you were so inclined.

I made a thread about MSi and getting a Phenom II. My MSi board is not stable with higher TDP CPUs. It is a problem with the MSi board.

I would at least get a cheap x4 like a 955. You will see dramatic improvement in new games like AC.
Sell your Athlon and use that money towards a 955. The are only around $100 now anyways.

Your board can handle the PII series.
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/785GM-E51.html

Otherwise I don't think there would be many games out there you couldn't get playable FPS in with your current setup "Bottleneck or not"

Ah, gotcha, I just read through your other thread. Seems you were scared off by the MSI has exploding VRM's scare. While that has happened to some users, I think most reported issues are on newer boards than yours. Personally, I think most users on OCN just drank the I hate MSI koolaid, and therefore think all their boards are junk, and will explode on you. It seems I see that argument on nearly every MSI motherboard related thread, while most people never have the issue.

I still think you'd be fine with a phenom II quad core, but at this point, you might as well just wait until Ivy Bridge if that's what you have your mind set on.

As long as your gaming performance is good enough, then why worry.

I just have to add, I think the bottleneck has become the irrational fear of many PC gamers, mainly due to the number of people who ask about it and the responses they get. I think there should be a sticky on this somewhere!

Basically, every single system has a bottleneck somewhere and every system will be limited at some point, but what is limiting the system in games does not matter (unless you're a bencher) unless the game is uncomfortable to play. If the game is comfortable to play there is no problem. What people should be asking instead of "Will this bottleneck this?" Is "Will I be able to game comfortably with these components together?". I know my Tri-Fire is bottlenecked by my CPU in games like, say, Black Ops, but I don't care because when I need the horsepower in something like, say, Metro 2033, the CPU is not a problem at all and I can game at 2560*1440 with everything set at max.

So, after that little rant, you will be OK for now and it will only be the newer, multi-threaded, games that will cause any problems, but it doesn't sound like you will be playing those so you will be fine with that card and that CPU! thumb.gif
