Thread Starter
Hi all,
I just built the above system and would appreciate any information/advice on getting the best out of it, for example how far will this overclock and how to do it. I had a little play with the AMD software but soon got lost mostly with the jargon used, and actually crashed a couple of times. I am a grandad trying to keep up with my grandkids and would appreciate any advice. I have quite a few modern games loaded for them when they visit and believe they could be running a lot better from the info I have gleaned from the internet.
Any help gratefully appreciated. Bazzeruk

Hey bazzeruk, welcome.

I would use the search feature and check the stickies at the top of the forum sections to get a grasp on the terminology and basic concepts. Do be careful when overclocking and monitor your temperatures with something like HWMonitor, Coretemp, etc. Especially when using a stock cooler that isn't rated to cool an overclocked CPU. Approach increasing the voltage with caution. You will need to start with small increments and test, as you will inevitably hit a wall that will prevent you from increasing speed at some point.

If you have a Black Edition processor (I think yours is?) you can simply use AMD overdrive to increase the CPU multiplier and then test with a program like Prime95. If you can run Prime for a while without overheating and without getting errors, slowly increase the multiplier and test until you become unstable (crash or error in Prime) and that is a basic threshold for overclocking your CPU. You can raise that limit by increasing voltage, but that will also drastically increase heat output, so you might need to think about an aftermarket cooler at that point.

If you have any questions that aren't already answered, start a thread. There are plenty of people that are able to help you!
