Why are the 2500K and 2600K faster than 990X?

What makes the 2500K and 2600K generally faster at gaming than the 990X (and sometimes they are all equal)? I would think that the 990X would "blow away" the 2500K and 2600K.

It bascially comes down to the fabrication of the chip and what it's being used for, also they made some improvements to the architecture of the sandybridge chips which makes them more efficient.

If you look here http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/142?vs=287 the 980x does beat the 2600k in some multithreaded functions

Cause 2500K and 2600K are based on Sandy Bridge architecture with is more efficient and has better IPC performance than Gulftown that 990X is based on.

Long story short 990X is pretty much a 6-core version of i7 9xx CPUs while i7 2x00K are based on the next overall better architecture.

The only scenario where 990X shines is when app can benefit from 6 cores / 12 threads, if not, then 2x00 are faster.

Clock for clock they (SB Procs) are faster due to architectural improvements, they overclock better for the same reason- as well as being unlocked, most benchmarks do not make full use of the Gultown architectures power which shines through in heavily threaded workloads.

It is really not much faster by having 3-4 FPS differences between all those 3 CPUs... but there is a big different between AMD chip how they handle multithreads.

Apparently in game like BF3 I found myself that my X4 975 @4.2Ghz is hitting 90-97% usage on all cores... and it only happens on Caspien Border map due it is a huge open space map some how stress out my CPU and started to bottleneck my GPUs Crossfire pretty badly down to 65-70% GPU usage.

This made thinking of an upgrade soon to Ivy Bridge and I wish I had gone with 2500k before.

If you are looking for new purchase or upgrades, please wait for Ivy Bridge. I'm sure you will love it. 3500K is what I've been eyeballing for on 22mb CPU.

- 30%-37% Faster
- Reduced Heat signature
- Less power consumption which will benefits the overall system without stressing the 750W PSU out in crossfire.
- PCI-E 3.0 (double bandwidth than PCI-E 2.0)
- XDR RAM capability (PCI-E 3.0, 2x faster than GDDR5)
- 4k resolution support

* HD 7950 and HD 7970 GPU will use PCI-E 3.0 + XDR RAM.
* HD 78x0 or below will remain PCI-E 2.0/2.1 + GDDR5.
* NVIDIA side not sure which model but I'm sure GTX 670 series are+

I'm hoping that Ivy Bridge setup in my spec would unlock the full potential performance of my HD6970 CFX @ high resolutions. right now it is being struggled with either drop in FPS or shuttering (shuttering can be fix with driver updates)

I sold my 980x and went to 2500k for my gaming pc. I gained a good 20-30%, but that also has to do with me getting a M4E that has a Nf200 chip on it. I can run my 3 480's at 8x16x16x. On my R3E it was running 16x8x8x.

Probably not...

The only real difference will be PCIe bandwidth.

The bigger question is, will 1155 IB be able to contend or even surpass what little gain 2011 has over 1155 (as far as gaming, 2011 will beat both in multithreading).

IB will be the best bang for buck, for sure....it will be same like now is X58 vs 1155, the first platform is more high end oriented, but yet it lose or its equal to SB, the only segemnt of performance when 2011 will pull off will be multi-tread based benchmarks/programs.
