GTX 560 shutdown

I purchased this card here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814500206 to replace the 5770 in my sig rig. I haven't put it into the water cooling loop yet.

The problem is now the computer crashes in certain applications; Borderlands and that Unigine DX11 benchmark being the foremost. What happens is that the screen flashes blank, and the video card fan speed drops to the minimum. The PC keeps running, but I don't know if its responding to pings and whatnot.

It doesn't seem to crash in The Sims 3 or Dragon Age 2, among others. It also endures Furmark, even with Prime95 running as well.

I played 4 player Borderlands and it crashed every few minutes (seemed to get more frequent as time went on, ended up playing on the onboard. Painful.) Later, I tried it in single player and it crashed once. I then used Rivatuner to increase the fan RPM to 100% and it stopped crashing.

I don't think the core temp ever went over 70C, though, even on normal fan speeds. However, the VRM area of the card gets HOT, so I suspect it may be the VRMs overheating?

Is this failure mode consistent with VRM overheat? If so, should I RMA it, since it overheats as it shipped?

I would RMA that 560. If it's the only thing you've changed since then, it's almost certain the card is defective.

Also, 70c seems a little hot for a stock gtx 560.

Well, I worry that the replacement may have the same problem, if it has the same cooler and such.

Fairly serious bump, but I finally decided to try and add the card to my water cooling loop, with a custom VRM heatsink.

450

Now, its much much better. Thing is, that massive VRM heatsink gets (very) hot in operation, and it can still kick off in a marathon gaming session. Honestly, there's little air flow in that part of the case and stuff runs all over the place near it, so I guess its not suprising. I dropped the Core speed from 820 to 800 flat and its been fixed, but that seems like a cop-out.

The reason I run water is to keep it quiet, so I don't want to add a VRM fan.

That VRM heatsink is a cut from a very large heatsink that cooled deflection drivers for a big screen TV. I'm wondering if I can add another chunk of the same heatsink to it by using thermal epoxy, gluing fin to fin at a 90 degree angle, getting the heatsink more out in the open behind the card? Or is that thermally too far from the VRMs to make a difference? I think it may work because the heatsink gets hot very evenly.

Shame because, full load on the core is 40C, even when the CPU is loaded. The 140mm rad I have can really disperse the heat!
